Business description:
If you have musical talent and can play a musical instrument, very well one of the best businesses you can start from home is music lessons. The best part about giving music lessons from your home is that you can share the joy of playing an instrument with your students, which for you means enjoying what you are teaching and enjoying your business. Another benefit to teaching music lessons from home is that the startup cost is minimal, in fact as long as you have the instrument and some music you are already on your way.

Materials needed:

  • Instruments - what ones you need will depend on what kind of music lessons you will be giving

  • Sheet music

  • Music stands

Space requirements:
To start giving music lessons you are going to need to turn a part of your house into a music studio, how much room you are going to need is going to depend on what instruments you will be giving lessons for. If you are going to be teaching the larger instruments, such as the drums, you are going to need to have a room set aside with the instruments already set up. If you are teaching trumpet or something, small like that you can use any room in the house that gives you privacy. For example, you can use a partition and separate your living room to create a music studio or you can use a spare bedroom for your music instruction area.

Time requirements:

How much time you put in this business is going to be up to you. You are going to be the one who decides when you are going to be giving lessons, so you can teach as little or as much as you would like. Just keep in mind that when giving music lessons they should be private lessons, so you want to schedule enough time in between for one person to leave before your next student shows up.

Income potential:

5 - By giving private music lessons to children or even adults, you can earn a decent income. In fact most private music lesson instructors can earn anywhere between $50 and $100 per lesson. What is going to determine the amount you make is the competition in your area, if there are many private instructors you are going to need to lower your fees to compete, but if there are a few instructors that are spaced out over a wide area, you can charge the higher amount. Your location is also going to affect how much you charge for your lessons.

Keys to success:

  • In order to give any kind of music lesson you are going to have to be knowledgeable about music in general. You should have experience playing a variety of different instruments; this is going to help you with reading different types of notes. You should also be familiar with all of the types of music that students will need to be reading, and you need to know about the techniques used for different instruments. For example, saxophone players use different fingering than a trumpet player.

  • You are going to have to market your music lessons, if nobody knows about your music lessons than you are not going to have any students, which means your business will end up failing. If you are giving music lessons from home you are probably trying to keep your startup costs low, luckily there are plenty of inexpensive ways to market your music lessons. You can place a classified ad, print out business cards, and hand them out throughout the day, or you can go to local music supply stores and ask them to post your fliers or spread the word about your business.

Risks:
  • One of the biggest risks that you face when giving private music lessons is that your students do not show up. TO help prevent this what you are going to want to do is have a written policy in place that states lessons are going to be prepaid, how far in advance you have them paid is up to you. In the policy, you are also going to want to state that even if the student does not show up they still have to pay for their lessons.
