If you have an expertise in a certain area, you can easily start your own consulting company. There are thousands of different consulting firms out there that help with HR, PR, marketing, and a handful of other things. Think about your expertise and specialized knowledge, perhaps you are a good mechanic; you can easily start your own consulting company. What makes consulting an attractive business is that you have the ability to find the type of employment you want to do. You are your own boss and you can decide how many hours you want to work and how much money you want to make.

People that are consultants have good advice or information to offer to others. Let's take a typist for example. Perhaps you would like to write a book, but you absolutely abhor typing. A consultant that has fast typing skills would be able to help you in this situation. You will need a computer with access to the internet so you can advertise your business. A good consultant also has the ability to network, socialize, and can market themselves without seeming arrogant. Start a blog and write some "how to" tips pertaining to the area in which you are working. For example, if you want to help people with weight loss, write a blog on how they can exercise for 30 minutes a day or how they can trim their diet to lose weight.

Depending upon the type of consulting you do, you will probably need to have an office in your home. Since you will need to do some advertising and marketing, you will want to have an area that you can go and think of catchy headlines and ads. Your specific consulting area will determine how much space you need to set aside for your company. If you are a mechanic, you will need to work on people's cars so you need to have enough room in your garage to do this.

The majority of your time will be spent marketing your business. Once you have your network of contacts, it won't take long to offer them advice or do some work for them. Really, you will wind up spending more time looking for people that need your help. You need to be self-motivated and dedicated in order for your consulting business to work.

Your earning potential is completely up to you. Some consultants will charge $50 an hour, while others will charge $500 a month or a week for their services. If you are a consultant writer, you will probably charge per piece for the articles and other things you write. The amount of money you earn is completely up to you. On a scale of 1-5, a consultant rates as a 3 for earning potential. This is due to the fact that some people can make $100,000 or more a year because they can charge more for their service. Smaller consultants like a housewife that does this part-time might not be able to dedicate as much time to it and it will be harder for her to make a big income from it.

To become successful with consulting, you need to advertise a lot. Develop a web site that has information about your services and actual testimonials from past clients. Most consultants will start blogs or start writing books to distribute to the public. Consider writing press releases, postcards, and brochures to get your name out there.

Being a consultant means you need to have the ability to do some research and provide factual information to others. Depending upon the field you are in, you need to get insurance to protect yourself. Going back to the mechanic, if you accidently forget to put a screw back on the car and this person gets in a wreck because of it; they can legally sue you for it. Make sure you take the proper steps to protect yourself from any of the risks you will take as a consultant.
