A cooking class will take a lot of room in your home. If you are teaching it out of your kitchen, move out an excess clutter from the kitchen so your students have the ability to walk around and watch everything you do. It is also important for your students to have enough room to move around as they cook so that they don't bump into one another.
Teaching a cooking class is the easy part, it's the preparation for the class that will take up a lot of time. Each week you need to come up with different lessons you want to teach on and then you must spend time at the grocery store and purchase all of the items. Most people that teach cooking classes only have their students there for about 2 hours. This gives you enough time to show them how to cook something and then assist them as they learn to do it on their own.
Cooking classes will make you a decent income. Most cooks charge about $20-$50 dollars per class. If you have 10 people one week and only one person the next week, this is a good indicator that your price may be a little too high. Consider lowering the price and change up the menu to attract some of your former students back. Depending upon how many classes you decide to teach a week, cooking classes will earn you an income of about $35,000. This isn't a bad living for an at-home job, especially an at-home job that you enjoy doing. On a scale of one to five, the career of cooking classes ranks at a 2.5 for earning potential. You can earn more if you will put in the hours.
To be successful with your cooking classes, don't just settle for a boring routine. Plan your class sessions and make sure people are enjoying themselves. Have samples of gourmet foods you have made for them to eat during class. Then, teach them how to cook this item. When people see things and actually touch or taste them, they have a stronger desire to learn how to actually make them. No matter how many times you have made something, practice it before you try it out on the class. Remember that you are teaching beginners here so the recipes must be easy to follow. Spend some money to market your new business to get it off the ground. Traditional advertising will work just fine and it will attract new clients and help your company gain exposure.
It is important to make sure you have insurance, especially since the risk of a fire has increased with all the new chefs cooking in your home. Insurance is a must-have and its also important to check with your local and state laws on teaching cooking classes so you can be in compliance with all laws.
