Covering your home business with good insurance

Starting your own home business requires a lot of work and time. There are several legal procedures you must do in order to properly operate your home business. One thing you need to consider is business insurance. Over half of all home business owners don't have insurance to cover their home business. These individuals mistakenly believe that their business is covered by their homeowner's insurance policy when this really isn't the case. Most homeowner's policies only cover about $3,000 worth of damages. What would happen if you had invested over $50,000 in equipment? There are several reasons to purchase business insurance and it really won't cost you that much money.

Go around your office and determine how much money you have invested in inventory and equipment. Calculate how much money it would cost you if you needed to replace it if a fire occurred or another disaster. Then you need to add on some extra risks like employees and customers. Do you have customers that actually come to your home business? How would you pay for the insurance costs if this person slipped and broke their leg while on your property? What would happen to your home business if your home needed to be excavated for termites or mold? Could you quickly move your business to operate out of a hotel room? With so many things up in the air, it makes sense to purchase some business insurance just to cover yourself.
Contact your homeowners insurance company to find out if they offer business insurance. Ask them what some of the restrictions are on your home business and property rights. Once you have a quote from them, move onto another company and get a quote. It will do you some good to get 3-6 quotes from insurance companies so you can figure out which one covers the most for the least amount of money.
The two main types of insurance coverage you need are liability and property damage. Liability insurance will protect you if someone is injured on your property or by one of your products. This means the person that broke their leg will be covered by your liability insurance and you don't need to come up with the money out of pocket. Property damage insurance is also important because it will protect all your property if there is damage from fire, water, and other things. You can get a computer replaced and even carpet replaced if it is damaged.
Most home business owners will opt for both liability and property damage insurance coverage. They protect your company from theft and other things. It is a good idea to purchase this type of insurance coverage in addition to your homeowners insurance policy. You may consider adding on natural disaster protection if you live in an area that is frequented by tornados and floods. When you purchase both insurance policies, it will be called a BOP plan and it is the most expensive type of business insurance protection out there.
Some home business owners will pay a little less to get a home office policy. A home office policy will cover all the same things as a BOP plan but it combines it with your homeowners insurance protection. It will cover liability and damage but it doesn't cover floods, tornados, and earthquakes. However, if you just want insurance to protect your basic equipment and loss of income, this is a great insurance program to try.
Speak with an insurance agent for more information on how you can protect your home business from financial disaster if something did happen. It is much better to be safe than sorry!
