When it comes to building a home business, everyone is always looking for the secret that will make your business profitable from your competitors. The trick is, there is no secret. It all comes down to hard work and a lot of dedication from you. Here are some ways to make your business profitable:

Step # 1 - Research your market

Everyone knows that they must have a good market to capture sales. If you are spending your time in the wrong market, your business won't go very far. Make sure you are marketing to the right group and over time you can start to expand your market as your business grows. Each market you tap into will bring new sales to your business and expand your customer base. Define niche markets to build your sales and then start creating marketing programs just for each niche market.

Step # 2 - Create new products

One of the biggest obstacles companies run into is that they don't get creative. They create one good product and then just stop producing new ones. You need to continually add new products to your line to increase your customers. The nice thing about creating new products is that it will inspire existing customers to keep purchasing, attract new customers that may not have been interested in your company before, and it allows you to combine products to make attractive package options. Packaging your products always generates bigger sales along with repeat customers.

Step # 3 - Advertise

You can't find new customers if you aren't out there advertising your company. Publicity is essential to any business and self-promotion is the key to making your home business take off. Use the newspapers and media members to your advantage by inviting them to your home to do a story on your business. If they don't go for it, fax them press releases when you create new products or when your company has reached a big goal. A simple way to advertise is to create a good web site. Your web site will be full of self-promotion and this will help your company go far when it is trying to convince customers to purchase products. Try partnering with other companies to promote your business. You need to get your name out there any way you can.

Step # 4 - Word-of-Mouth

Many companies have found that their best growth comes from word-of-mouth marketing. When you can get your existing customers to talk about your products and recommend them to their friends, it's only a matter of time until you get hit with a wave of new sales. The people you want to get to are members that can influence a lot of people. They will be able to convince others to purchase your product and this creates some great advertising for your company. Don't forget to thank your customers that referred their friends.

Step # 5 - Surveys

To find out how your company is doing, you must start asking your customers for their opinion. Ask your customers to complete surveys for a prize or reward. A lot of people don't want to complete the survey if they know they will not get anything out of it. Surveys can help you figure out what people like and dislike about your company and products along with how you can improve. The surveys should be short and to the point because people don't want to spend too much time taking them.

Hopefully the above tips will give you some ideas as to how you can make your business profitable and stay around for a long time.
