Factors besides staying at home that come into play with home businesses
If you are making the switch from a regular office job to a home business, you might be focused on the "home" aspect more than the business aspect. Sure, it will be great to do your work from your computer in your pajamas. Of course, you will be delighted to skip the daily commute. And won't it be wonderful to be there everyday in case one of your kids has an emergency or needs to stay home from school? If these are the only factors that you are considering when making the switch to a home business, please read on. Here are a few other factors that you should consider.
Do you have the discipline for a home business? It is harder than you might think to make yourself sit down and work hard when you are in your own environment. If you are at the office, you will never think about the cat box that needs cleaned out and you won't be available when Aunt Bee calls with the family gossip. If you are trying to work from home, you might find that there is an adjustment period and it takes plenty of discipline to make yourself work from home. When you are starting out, you should make a schedule for the hours that you will work and then stick to it.

What do you know about finance and home business? When you are at the office and you run out of ink in your computer, what do you do? Call tech support? Go to the supply closet? What about when you are working from home? You will need to go buy the new ink cartridge and who pays for it? You do, but is it you the person or you the business that is paying? When you start working for your home business, you need to start thinking about yourself as a business. Keep track of all of the items that you buy. Make sure that personal items and business items are paid for separately because you will deduct all of your business expenses at the end of the year.
Do you know what you are getting in to? If you are starting your own home business, you have a mighty hard row to hoe. You will basically be doing all of the things that a big business does but you will be doing those things all by yourself. Think about all of the aspects of business that you will be responsible for: the advertising and marketing, the finance, the customer service, the sales, the production, the trouble shooting. Before making the leap into your home business think hard about just how much work is involved. It isn't all just hanging out in your pajamas. You will have to actively seek work all of the time, manage your accounts, and provide the product or the service. It is likely that you will be doing these things with out much help. Be sure that you are ready.
Is your family behind you? If you have a family, you need to understand that a home business affects the entire home. There will be business phone calls to the home, you will also be seeing clients in your home, and doing business from your home. All the family members need to be on board to help you succeed. They need to understand that the home is now also a place of business and sometimes professionalism will be important. It might be hard to explain that concept to a four year old. Your family also needs to understand the amount of time that you will be putting into your business. Especially when you are first starting out, you will be eating, drinking, and sleeping business. This can be quite a sacrifice for your family.
