Finding an appropriate niche market for your small business

Are you a small business owner? Are you trying to find the appropriate niche market for your small business? A niche market is a type of market that is pinpointed to a specific audience, and products for niche markets are usually not for mainstream customers or providers. There are so many different kinds of market sectors available that it can be overwhelming to try and find the right niche market! Here are a couple of ways that you can find an appropriate niche market for your business:
 Define and outline your product: Before even researching a niche market, you need to have a specific sense of what your product is. What functions can your product perform, or what benefits does your product have? Even more importantly, what makes your product and business unique over your competitors? By pinpointing the interesting and unique aspects of your product, you will be able to better discern how to market your product. This might be able to lead you to create a Unique Selling Position, which will make your product stand out amongst competitors. Remember, in addition to having a Unique Selling Position in regards to your unique product, you could also consider having your Unique Selling Position be that your company works only within a certain niche market (or target audience). Being highly specialized to deal with only certain groups can make your product very unique!


 Brainstorm different markets and groups which have a use for your product: If you already have clients for your business, think about what your different clients have in common. Do they all have the same needs and focuses? What are your clients looking for when they approach your business? If you feel like you still aren't getting a good idea of your clients' similar needs, you might consider performing a survey with your clients and asking them what they expect and would like to see from your company. This might be able to help you find an appropriate niche market for your small business!

If you do not have any current clients and are just starting up your small business, one of the ways that you can research potential niche markets is by performing different keyword searches on the Internet. Be as specific as you can in your keywords, looking for products and markets that relate to what you have to offer. This could give your inspiration in regards to what you want your niche to be. You can even check the popularity of these websites by checking on how many "hits" these sites have received.

 Don't let your niches conflict with your business plan: Think logically when you are considering different niche options. Will this niche allow you to still work within your business plan and goals? For example, if you own a small lamp business which makes hand-crafted lamp shades, you will not want to find a niche market which has mass-produced, inexpensive lamps. Instead, make sure that your business will be able to flourish and do what it is designed to do!

When brainstorming and asking yourself the different questions above, it is a good idea to write down the first things that you think of, without too much analyzing. If you overanalyze you might miss the target altogether! Instead, just write the first things that you think of in regards to your niche market, and then see if any of them work for you! If you still have difficulties or are unsuccessful in your niche market endeavors, then you might want to consider consulting a business expert. They might have further ideas for your specific product and work!
