Having insurance for a home based business is very important. But finding and getting a good insurance policy can be an overwhelming task. This article discusses getting insurance for a home based business to help make finding a great insurance policy for a home business a little bit easier.

Not enough

Some business owners who run a home business may have renters' or homeowners' insurance and do not even think about the fact that this insurance coverage is not enough to cover their home business. It is not a good idea for a home business owner to rely on their homeowners' or renters' insurance policies to cover their home business.

Every home business, no matter how small needs its own insurance coverage. Some homeowners' or renters' policies will not cover business property so if it is stolen or damaged or if someone who is dealing with a person's business gets hurt on the business owner's property, they may have to pay for these things out of their own pocket.

What insurance should include

When a person is looking to get an insurance policy for their home based business they should make sure that it includes the following items: any business property, personal injury, advertising injury, professional liability, business liability, workers compensation, loss of business data, life, health, computer, loss of income, crime and theft, and disability.

If a person uses their car for both personal use and for their business, they should also make sure that their insurance coverage will cover any accidents or injuries that occur when they are doing a business errand. A home business owner should definitely have insurance coverage for any cars or trucks that are used exclusively for their home business as well.

It is also important that when a home business owner is getting insurance to cover their home based business they should make sure that the policy they get will pay them the full replacement cost of any of their business furnishings or equipment. Some policies will only cover the value of the used office items and this is generally a much lower amount.

Policies for the home based business and the home

Many home business owners find it ideal to get an insurance policy that will cover both their home and its furnishings as well as their business and the property equipment used for the home based business. These insurance policies will generally also cover the home based business against liability lawsuits and the loss of income as well.

Usually these business and home policies are less expensive, even when compared to adding riders to a home business owner's regular homeowners insurance. They also tend to be less expensive than getting a separate insurance policy for the home and a separate insurance policy for the home based business.

A home business owner should check to see what is covered and what is not covered in whichever insurance policy they end up getting. It is important that they get the right coverage for their type of home based business; even if it costs a bit more.

Important questions to ask

There are several important questions that a home business owner should ask when they are getting an insurance policy for their home based business. Asking these questions can ensure that they will get the coverage they need for their business. A few examples of possible questions include the following: they should ask themselves if they have business vehicles and employees, if someone can sue them if they make a mistake or provide incorrect information, and if they perform a professional service.

Other possible questions include: what would happen to their business if they were injured, if they are making a product, what property is owned by their business, and type of equipment they have and how they use it, what would happen to their business if there was a fire, where the business is conducted, if people come to their home, and if they will be doing any of their work off-site.

Shop around

To make sure that they get the best price and the best coverage from their insurance policy, a home business owner should shop around and do a lot of research before getting an insurance policy for their home based business.
