If you want to be your own boss and work-from-home, take a look at becoming a graphic designer. Freelance graphic design jobs are in demand because companies are finding that it is cheaper to pay-per-piece than to hire a full-time graphic designer. A freelance graphic designer doesn't have their own fixed hours; they can work at 1:00 in the morning or 10:00 at night. They also have the ability to pick and choose which jobs they want to work on. To be successful as a graphic designer, you need to have a creative mind and the know-how to be a good graphic designer.

Create a good web site that offers all the services you can provide along with a pricing structure. Don't use the word "freelance" on your web site, simply stick with graphic designer and make sure you get your name registered. Promote your site using a blog, social networking sites, and affiliate marketing. This is a great way to start gaining attention from others and hopefully word-of-mouth will wind up doing you some good.

Check with companies you have worked with in the past to see if they need any graphic design work. Even if they don't need help now, leave your card with them and follow-up in a few months. Always look online and in your local newspaper to find out if companies are hiring freelance designers. You may get into a price war with another graphic designer, so you should be flexible with your rates.

A good graphic designer will be proficient in several programs like Adobe In Design and Quark Express. You must be able to come up with a creative vision for companies, and having a home office will really help you. You need to have a room where you can think and let your imagination run free. Setting aside a complete room for your graphic design work is a wonderful idea, especially if you plan on being successful for a long time. The other benefit of having a home office is that you may have some video meetings with companies and it helps to have a professional-looking environment to show them. Keep your office clean and make sure the other members of your family know that is where you go to work and they are not to go in there without your permission.

Graphic designers must have nice computers that are loaded with tons of memory. All the files you will be creating will be pretty big, especially since most printers will need them as vector images and other large sizes in order to print them. You may see some designers that have both Mac's and PC's, this is because it is easier for them to design in one computer format, but there may be times when files need to be converted to the other computer format.

As you can see, being a graphic designer is a big investment. If you are good at what you do and you get out there and start getting clients, you can earn your money back pretty quickly. The longer it takes you to start marketing, the more clients you will be losing to your competitors. Freelance graphic designers have to sell themselves and this may be hard for someone that doesn't have good social skills. Advertise like crazy to start getting your name out there and try to accept any job, no matter how big or small it may be. Watch your client's deadlines and make sure you always meet them. We don't live in a perfect society to it is inevitable that you will have some clients that you truly despise, always hold your tongue and do your best remember once you are done with their job, you don't have to go back to work for them again!
