Home based business basics

Home based businesses are becoming more popular, thanks almost entirely to the internet. Advances in technology have made is so that you can, virtually be anywhere in the world while you are, actually, sitting in your home office. Just about anybody with a skill and a computer can set up a home business, selling his or her skill and doing the business via computer. If you are considering starting a home based business, here are a few of the basic things that you should know about home businesses.
It takes money to make money-if you are moving your business home, it might not take much money to start out. However, if you are beginning a home business you need to consider the amount of money that goes into building a profitable business. Start out by making a business plan that includes a budget and figure out if you have the funds to launch a business. If you don't, you might consider getting funding through a home business loan.

It takes time-for some reason people think they are going to have so much more time after they move their business home but they find out that they don't. This usually evens out after a little training but it takes a while to find a routine that works. You might subtract the drive time from the time that you spend out of your house every day and expect to work that many hours. That's just not going to happen, at least not at first. Your productivity is going to plummet for the first couple of weeks. Instead of being in the office at 8:00 am sharp, you might find yourself lounging over your morning coffee or waiting to start until you have finished reading the newspaper or doing the crossword puzzle. You might find out that the trade off for driving to the office is being interrupted by the telephone or your over-active schnauzer.
Keep everything legit-for some reason working at home feels less professional than working in an office. Even though you are working from home, you still need to do things like pay your taxes and keep track of all your expenses. Home based businesses are magnets for IRS audits so make sure that everything you do is documented and on the up-and-up. If you end up hiring employees, you need to keep that legit as well. Make sure that each employee signs an employee contract that details the terms of employment. You also need to check with your state to see if you need a work certificate, a sales tax number, or a separate bank account for your business expenses.
Work on separating your home life from your business life-this is going to be one of your hardest challenges when you get into home business. There needs to be a distinct line between work, and not work. If you don't draw this line, you will either end up working too much or not working enough. If being at home feels homey, you might find yourself watching General Hospital in the middle of the day instead of working on the Johnson account. On the other hand, if your home feels like an office, you might find yourself eating dinner at the computer, where you also ate your breakfast and lunch. To avoid this, you need to set the parameters of your office and make that area functions as much like an office as you can make it. Don't take work out of the office and don't take your personal life into the office. This one rule can help you and your family adjusts to the home business.
