One of the most important aspects of managing your home business is managing your home business finances. This means that you are going to need to learn how to do your own home business accounting. Home business accounting is going to consist of more than just keeping track of your income and expenses, it is also going to include inventory and keeping records.

Here are the steps that you will need to follow to get started with your home business accounting.

Step one:
The first thing that you are going to need to do is to organize your papers. The best way to do this is to create a file system on your computer or in a file cabinet. The type that you choose is going to depend on if you are dealing with a lot of paper or if most of your work will be done on the computer. Although this step is rather simple, most people do not bother with it because they don't think being organized is that important.

Step two:
Now you need to put the file system into use. You want to avoid putting everything off until the end of the business year because you will be overwhelmed trying to organize all of your files and get taxes done. You want to go through your stuff on a monthly basis at least. This will allow you to ensure that everything balances each month, and if something is off you will have an easier time finding out what is off because you balanced everything the month before, means less stuff to go through.

Step three:
Now you are going to need to come up with a way to keep track of certain expenses. Most expenses you can simply hang onto the receipt and write it off at the end of the year. However, home offices and computers require something special. If you plan to use a home office for your home business, you are going to need to create record of your home office for your accounting purposes. You want to record how many hours you work each day, what days you are working, and how big your home office is. This record will serve as an official record for the IRS, so make sure you file it away with your business papers.

If you plan to use your personal computer with your home business, you will need to keep strict records of when it was used and how long it was used for your home business. The reason for this is that the IRS has strict requirements for this expense because of how easy it is to take advantage of. The best thing that you can do is keep a calendar by your computer and write down what days you worked and the exact hours that you worked. File the calendar away with your tax records each year.

Step four:
The next thing that you are going to need to do is to choose accounting software or you can create your own spreadsheets with Excel or a similar program if you have some kind of accounting background.

Step five:
Once you have chosen the accounting software or you have created the accounting spreadsheets you are going to want to input the expenses and income that you have incurred each month in the proper categories. You are also going to want to make sure that your bank statement reconciles, and you are going to want to make sure that everything balances. One of the best things about using accounting software is that once you input the information everything else is done for you. You can input all invoices that you have obtained, and then mark them as paid once you pay them, etc.
