Business description-At home small businesses that involve the Arts cover a wide range. From artists who restore photographs to web designers who work from home Arts small businesses can be successfully done from home. These businesses include the following categories (but are not limited to):

  • Art Directors

  • Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators

  • Multi-Media Artists and Animators

  • Commercial and Industrial Designers

  • Fashion Designers

  • Graphic Designers

  • Public Relations Specialists

  • Online gallery owners

  • Crafters-these are artists who make and sell scrapbooks, jewelry, pottery etc.

Basically any business that markets, contributes to or sells an art-related product or service falls into this category.

Materials needed-You will need any applicable art supplies that are required for your business. If you are selling art related inventory you will need access to marketable inventory. If you work in an arts related field as a contractor or free lancer you will contacts that are willing to utilize your business. Most Arts related businesses will also need computer access for marketing and shipping their product or service.

Space requirements-The space that is needed to operate an Arts related home business will vary widely with the type of business. If you are working in a field that only requires computer access than a home office should suffice. For those who are crafting or selling an art product they will need studio space and inventory space to store completed products. In addition if your business is selling a product or service you will need to have shipping and receiving space.

Time requirements-Like all small business that operate from home the time needed will be very much left up to you. In order to grow and sustain your business you should be prepared to devote as much time as possible. Many at home workers appreciate the flexible time schedule that working from home allows them. This more convenient schedule can often be worked around family and other personal commitments depending on the type of Arts related business you have.

Income potential-3 While some Arts related businesses are highly successful (online gallery owners recently reported average earnings of up to $175,000 dollars per year) it is important to keep in mind that the art world can be highly capricious. What is successful at one time can be next year's (or next month's) loser. Successful and savvy owners of Arts related small businesses will be able to anticipate this and continue to maximize income.

Keys to success-The keys to success in an Arts related business are basically the same as any other type of small business. Owners of these businesses must be able to have the right product or service available to market. They must be able to correctly understand who their target market is and where they shop. They must be able to place their product or service in the right store (either online or retail location) and be able to market their product or service successfully. If you are hoping to run your business as a consultant or freelancer you must have contacts that will provide you with a steady stream of work and have an impeccable reputation for the quality of work that you can deliver.

Risks-Arts related businesses carry with them a fairly high degree of risks. If you are operating from home you negate the risks of overhead costs becoming too much but inventory and operating costs can eat up much of your cash flow. Failure to understand who your target market really is and what they want from you can lead to your small business not being able to succeed. In addition there is a high risk of a small business not being able to respond quickly enough to changes that occur in the art world.
