Home Business Idea: Auction Selling

Business description
There are several ways to have a home auction selling business. The old fashion auctions where live products are auctioned off by an auctioneer are still around and many are thriving. The more modern spin on auction selling deals with selling products in online auctions. These auctions range from general auction websites that deal with all kinds of products to auction websites devoted to a specific genre of product.
Materials needed
A home auction selling business will require the basic materials needed for any home business such as an accounting program and a place to keep files. However, on top of those materials a home auction business will require products to sell. If the auction selling business will be done primarily online, then the business will require a computer with an internet connection. Access to a good shipping company is also necessary if the auction selling is to be done online

Space requirements
No matter if a home business owner is planning on operating an old fashion auction selling business or an internet business, they will need space to store all of their products before they go to auction or are shipped to purchasers. The owner will likely want to have an office space of some sort in their home, or at the very least, a desk dedicated to their business affairs.
Time requirements
A home auction selling business can demand as much or as little time as an owner wishes. However, in order to make a consequential and consistent income, an owner will need to spend quite a bit of time. They will need to purchase or find products to auction, they will need to locate live auctions and bring the products to the auction site, or, if they are selling online, then they will need to upload photos of their products and write brief descriptions of each one. They will then need to ship the product to the proper address once the product has been purchased. Some of this will become routine and take significantly less time than it will when the business is first starting.
Income potential (scale of 1-5): 5
Businesses on general auction websites like eBay have the potential of bringing in over a million dollars each year. Also, those auctioning land at live auctions may be able to bring in large amounts of cash. However, for the most part auction selling is simply a good way to supplement a more steady income. Especially if a owner is looking to sell products on a specialty auction site online. These sites require authentic and often rare collectibles. While a big sale might come along once in a while, it will be difficult to maintain any consistency because of how hard it will be to acquire products to sell.
Keys to success
There are several keys to success in the auction selling business. One key is to sell products that are in high demand. A new gaming system at Christmas time may go for two or three times what it is worth at auction. Knowing which products are hot and when is the best way to make big profits. Also, many times a owner will have a high volume of products that they are not able to sell for super low prices. Instead of trying to make a large profit on each sale, try selling the large volume of products for a low profit. The cumulative will result in larger profits. This also reduces the risk of forfeiting posting fees.
Risks
A risk that is present with any auction is that a product does not sell or it sells for less than expected. This can result in a loss of profits or posting fees. A seller could even be stuck with a high volume of products that no one wants to buy. These sorts of risks are inevitable, but can be prevented through proper planning.
