Business description-A business consultant functions as an advisor for information on how to deal with specific business issues. Business consultants can be called on to handle a variety of issues that include but are not limited to: IRS issues, bank foreclosures, undercapitalization, employee issue, marketing and sales issues, organizational problems, a business plan or a growth and development plan. A business consultant is a leader who works to deliver his client's objectives. What you are selling is your knowledge and skill for everything that is business related. Failure to do this will mean that you are out of a job. In addition business consultants who are working from home will also be responsible for the billing of their clients.

Materials needed-There are very few materials that are needed to start a business consulting service. Your major asset is the knowledge that you already possess to help your clients. While you may need a website for advertising purposes, business cards and computer access even these things are not required when starting.

Space requirements-You will need home office space if you wish to have a permanent place to conduct business. However most business consultants work on site for their clients so this is negotiable.

Time requirements-You must keep in mind that most business consultants work the same 9-5 hours as their clients. In addition you will have to be available by phone and possibly in person for clients who may need your advice and expertise after business hours. Most work from home business consultants find themselves working full-time.

Income potential-5 The income potential for business consultants can be very high with some business consultants in urban areas making up to $150 dollars per hour. Many business consultants throughout the country average around $120,000 dollars per year before bonuses. However it is important to keep in mind that salary will vary dramatically due to location and demand in the marketplace. In addition your reputation will help increase the price your clients are willing to pay.

Keys to success-In order to be successful in the world of business consulting you must be able to prove that you have successfully handled specific problems for a positive outcome. Most potential clients will require references before hiring you. You must also have a professional reputation that indicates that you show up when needed, often enough, and for a long enough time period to complete the job. You must also be attentive and focused on your clients needs. You should also be more than willing to go the extra mile and keep your client's best interest at heart at all times. In addition a successful business consultant will have a network of other resources to quickly draw on. These resources should include contacts with accountants, lawyers and other financial people. You should be able to provide your clients with immediate assistance from someone within your network. Most of all to be a successful business consultant you need to have a passion for ideas, people and what you do.

Risks-There is very little financial risk involved in setting up a business consulting service due to the low overhead. However you should keep in mind that most companies prefer to hire a business consultant that has extensive experience making it much more difficult to break into this field. In addition it is important to understand that this is a highly competitive field with many people trying to become successful business consultants.
