Space requirements:
To effectively run a computer repair shop you are going to need to have a decent sized room in your house. The room is going to need to be big enough to store your tools and any computers that you are currently working on. You will want to turn this room into a workshop, but you also need to have a small portion of the room set aside for office space and meeting with customers. If you do not have a room big enough in your house, you can always turn your garage into your computer repair shop and use a small room inside your house for office space.
Time requirements:
The great thing about running a computer repair shop is that you can spend as much or as little time as you want on repairing computers. You can turn this into a part-time job from home, where you only work on it at night and on the weekends or you can turn it into a full-time business spending 8 hours a day repairing computers and keeping up with your bookwork.
Income potential:
5 - Computer repair is always in high demand because people do not want to spend extra money on replacing a broken computer; they would rather get the old one fixed. In addition, people will spend money to have things added to their computer, such as Ram or memory to make their computers better.
Keys to success:
- You need to get familiar with computers because you will be doing a lot of work on computers, if you are not comfortable on your own computer you need to practice until you are comfortable with it. You need to practice installing and uninstalling programs, troubleshooting devices, and making yourself memorize the tools and options in all of the Windows environments. The reason for this last part is not everybody is going to have the same version of windows on their computers, so you will need to be familiar with them all.
- You need to become certified in computer repair. To be certified in computer repair you will need to take a class that will help prepare you for the CompTIA certification, which will certify you as an A+ PC Repairman. This program has two different certifications, one in software, and one in hardware; you will need to be certified in both.
- Volunteer to work on as many computers as possible to help you gain experience. The more experience you have the better jobs you will do, which will help with word of mouth advertising.
Risks:
- The biggest risk that you take is trying to fix a computer and not being able to. What you need to know about fixing computers is that it is not an easy task. In order to properly fix a computer you are going to need to have all of the skills and knowledge required to fix that specific problem. If you are, faced with a problem that involves manipulating the registry files or any other difficult tasks, do not attempt to do it. Before you do that kind of stuff you will want to get additional training so that you are fully prepared to do it right.
