Home Business Idea: Consulting

Business description-Consulting could be perhaps the most accessible entrepreneurial business one can undertake because there's basically zero start-up cost. The appeal of consulting lies in the fact that there is no office to rent, no inventory to buy, no special equipment, no franchise fees, no incorporation costs, and you can spend as little or as much as you want on advertising and marketing. All you really need is to know how to do something that most people do not know how to do and would be willing to pay money to either learn how to do or have it done for them. Some may argue that knowledge is a consultant's most important intangible asset, but in reality, reputation is. Keep in mind that knowledge can be easily bought, or even sub-contracted, while reputation cannot. While you could know everything in the world, but if no one knows you know it, you are not going to make a living with it. The most effective form of marketing is still word-of-mouth referrals, and that relies entirely on your reputation. Most consultants begin their at home work with an established reputation in their field of expertise.

Materials needed-There are no required materials to begin being a consultant. The only equipment you may need is anything that is applicable to your field of consulting.

Space requirements-A home office may be nice but is not even required.

Time requirements-While some businesses (sales, investing etc.) will make money while you sleep consulting requires an active work presence. Keep in mind that you will only be making money when you have been contracted to consult.

Income potential-5 The income potential for consultants is unlimited but is based on what your area of expertise is, location and the demand for your services. If you possess knowledge that that is harder to find or in more demand you will find yourself making considerably more than other consultants. It is important to keep in mind as well that consultants are generally needed by clients that have the resources to pay for them. This makes urban areas much more likely to generate income for consultants.

Keys to success-The ability to communicate what you know to others is at the very essence of consulting. It is in fact, your product. And just like any product-based business, you need a showroom. If you do not have a built-up inventory of reference-able customers, you need something else that shows what you know and your ability to communicate it, and the more the better. A large key to being successful is to avail yourself of every opportunity to write or speak about your area of expertise. Perhaps most importantly, you will need to develop both your written and verbal communication skills. Remember that these skills are as critical to your success as a consultant as your core subject matter knowledge is. One other very important thing to do is to develop the "30 second elevator pitch" in both written and verbal form and memorize it. You will need to be able to clearly and accurately describe what you do to anyone, not just an educated consumer or peer. Work to figure out a way to describe it in layman's terms that does not water it down so much as to be meaningless.
Risks-While there is little to no financial risk in starting your own consultant business if you are dependant on this for a living you could find yourself scrambling for work. If your reputation is less than stellar or your professional demeanor leaves something to be desired you may find yourself having to enter the workforce as regular worker.
