A home eBay business generally focuses on selling products through the online auction website known as eBay. The businesses can either sell products the owner has acquired or has stored, or it may get its products from a drop shipping company.

Materials needed

Some essential materials for an eBay business include a computer with internet connection and an account with eBay. If the home eBay business owner is planning on running a website along with selling products on eBay, they may consider having a server to handle memory storage. Other materials will include products to auction, affiliation with a good shipping company, along with any other materials generally required to run a business.

Space requirements

If a home eBay business owner is planning on purchasing products to sell, they will need to have a place to store the products while they are waiting to be purchased. They will also need a place to work at their computer. The ideal situation would be to have an office set aside in the house where work takes place, but in reality, business can be done anywhere the computer can connect to the internet.

Time requirements

The time required of an eBay business owner will depend on how many products an owner is planning on trying to sell at once and how often products will change. eBay sellers must upload photos of products, write brief descriptions, and ship purchased merchandise. While all of this will take time at first, if the an owner sells the same products every day, then it will take less time to upload each product onto eBay because everything will have been done previously.

Income potential (scale of 1-5): 5

eBay scores a perfect five on the income potential scale because eBay businesses really do have endless earning potential. Some eBay businesses earn up to one hundred fifty thousand dollars each month. Granted, that number represents the minority of eBay users, but it is indicative of the potential eBay home businesses offer. However, most eBay home businesses are best used has a source of supplemental or extra income. Many people do not earn a dime auctioning products on eBay, while others earn enough to spend having a good time on the weekends. The income potential of an eBay home business will depend on the products being sold, the quantity of those products, and the amount of time a business owner spends.

Keys to success

The key to success with an eBay business is finding products that will earn a profit after the eBay fees and shipping costs are covered. Generally, if a product looks like it is a good price, and shipping is included in the price, it will sell quickly. However, products that are not competitive with similar products on eBay may not sell at all.

Build a loyal client base. By developing a website to go along with an eBay business, a home business owner will attract customers through their eBay postings that will eventually stop using eBay and go directly to the business's website.

Risks

Like with any business, eBay requires fees that must be paid on each product that is posted, and then on every product that is sold. An eBay home business owner risks losing those fees if their products do not sell.

Also, if an eBay business owner invests in a product that does not sell, they will be stuck with a room full of lost money. To avoid these risks business owners should choose their merchandise carefully and then price that merchandise even more carefully to ensure it sells.
