Purpose statements do not just need to be used to talk about the business as a whole, they can also be used to encourage and motivate teams of employees who are working for a business.

Discussing goals

When a business manager sets up employee teams, they need to take the time to sit down with them and discuss their aims or their goals. This gives the employees the opportunity to discuss the aims and make sure that everyone is on the same page. It is during this first meeting, that purpose statements could be used to motivate the teams.

There are a couple of ways that an employer or business manager could go about using purpose statements. First, the business manager or employer could brainstorm with their employee teams and develop a good purpose statement. Involving all of the employees in the development of the purpose statement may make it more affective. Since each employee would feel they have a say in how they want to reach a specific goal, they make work harder to achieve their goal.

The second way that a business manager or employer could use a purpose statement to motivate their employee teams is by telling the teams a statement that they have already developed beforehand. Because a purpose statement should be clear, specific, and concise, it should be very easy for the employees to understand.

How purpose statements motivate

It may seem strange that one or two short sentences could motivate a team of employees, but it can. One way that a purpose statement can motivate employees is that it can remind them of their goal and purpose. Managers or employers should pose the team's purpose statement in a place where each team member can see it everyday. Being constantly reminded about a goal can help it be achieved.

Another way that a purpose statement can motivate a team is that it gives them a purpose. Yes, being on a team does give an employee a little more of a purpose than if they were not a member of a team. But if the team does not have a purpose, each employee will quickly forget that they were even placed on the team in the first place. Purpose statements do just that, they give each team member and the team a purpose.

Purpose statements help a team work together. That is very motivating. A team that has team members who work together can motivate each other. When a team has members who work against each other, they will slowly break apart. But a team that has a purpose statement as a core of their team work will motivate each other as they work together and are motivated by their purpose statement.
