Home businesses often seem like a great idea until people get their money sunk in and discover that nothing is happening. They then sink more money into various advertising campaigns, still nothing happens, and then they declare bankruptcy and go back to the rat race. This is an all too familiar scenario but it doesn't have to happen to you. Hundred of thousands of home business are successful. To ensure that your home business is one of the successful ones, try to avoid the following pitfalls.

Going in blind-
you love to bake and always provide the most popular deserts at your kid's events and functions. Your brownies are always the first ones bought at any bake sale and at the cake auctions your cakes make more money than anybody else's. One day a neighbor suggests that you could make money by selling your goodies. You talk to the lady at the local café and she says she would love to offer your bake goods on her menu. You also talk to the guy running the local gas station and he says that he will let you sell your cookies there. So it's done right? You go home and make a bunch of cookies and pies and you are in business for yourself.

This is a great example of going in blind. Before beginning the home business journey, you need to at least get a map. Some businesses succeed but most don't. Learn what you can about what is necessary to make a small business happen. Find out about the competition. Make a budget that includes an itemized list of overhead costs, advertising costs, and any other expenses. Then project the revenue that you can make from sales. It is a good idea to compute several figures here, one for if things go as expected and the other for if things do not go as well as expected. Subtract your expenses from your profits and find out what you can expect on the bottom line. The more homework you do up front, the less likely you will be to have unpleasant surprises down the road.

Not having a marketing plan-many home businesses fail because the owners are not able to contact potential customers. If you are starting a home business, you must figure out a way of generating business for yourself. If you are going to do technical writing, how are you going to get the contracts? If you are going to start a cleaning company, for who will you be cleaning? Figure out before you begin who your customers will be, how you will contact them, and how you will persuade them to hire you rather than somebody else. There are certain things that you will need to do. For example, create a website or hire someone to create one for you. You should also place an ad in the phonebook and have business cards made up. These things all take money but you have to spend money to make money. No matter how tight your budget, you need to focus your resources on marketing and advertising.

Procrastination-sometimes people go into home business to get away from the rat race. The sad truth is that the rat race is everywhere and you won't get away from it. You are still in a race. If someone emails you about your product, get back with him or her immediately. If you need to update your website, don't wait until after the weekend to do it, do it now. When you are starting your small home business, it is in a delicate state and you should treat it accordingly. Think of the business as a baby. It needs to be nurtured and cared for all of the time. There should be a sense of urgency that drives your contacts and interactions when you are launching your business. Try to focus on that sense of urgency. Your clients will notice and you will avoid this pitfall.
