How can I better foster employee growth?

Companies can apply effective approaches to foster employee growth, movement within the company, and promotion from within. All approaches involve opening up dialogue and engaging in conversations differently. Specific ideas include:

- Create mastermind groups within your organization consisting of employees who represent different departments. The benefits: employees learn more about other areas, become interested in new opportunities and develop networking contacts within the organization to facilitate movement.

- Develop a coach approach. As a manager, you can assume your role as a coach, thinking partner or facilitator of conversation related to goals. Shift from the mindset of performance evaluator to advocate.

- Expose employees to the "big picture." With a clearer understanding of the organization as a whole, employees can develop their own ideas on how to create value and where to do it within the business.

- Identify your highly motivated employees. They're more likely to be receptive to movement anyway.
