How to find the right location and markets for your small/home business


If you are starting out a home or small business, or if you are moving your business to a new location, you will need to take into consideration the best location and markets for your business. These are really important things to take into consideration, because the future and success of your small or home business often hinges on the right location and markets. Here are a couple of points to consider so that you can find the right location and markets for your small home or business:

1) Consider the taxes in the area: Different state laws and taxes can make some areas more suitable for your type of business. However, you should also remember that although taxes are an important thing to consider, sometimes the location and target audience will be more beneficial to your business in another area. If profits will potentially be higher in an area with higher taxes, sometimes it is better to just "eat" the extra amount you will have to pay to the government.

2) Consider the people who live in the area: This is important thing to consider, because the people who live in the area should consist of the target markets for your small or home business. When thinking about people in the area, consider if these people will have a need for your products or services. If your target audience in your small or home business consists of families, then you will want to look into an area that is suitable for families. The number of schools in a given location will indicate how many families live in an area. Is addition, you will also consider the potential income of the people who live in the area - will they be able to afford what your small or home business has to offer?

3) Are there competitors that are located nearby? Another thing to take into consideration for your possible new location is the amount of competitors in the area. The availability and accessibility of the product and services of your business is very important - if there are people offering things similar to your company, then you might not want to place yourself in that market. Look at finding a market where you have a smaller amount of competitors, or a place with no competitors at all! An area with no competitors is definitely the ideal market and location for you to be in!

4) Take costs into consideration: If you are planning on leasing some type of office or retail space for your small or home business, than you will want to consider the cost of leasing a space. For example, if your small business is in retail, the best place for your business might be a shopping mall. If you can pay the high-cost for renting a space in a shopping mall, you might want to go there. However, if you can't afford paying that high of rent for your small business, you might want to look into going somewhere else.

5) Personal Considerations: Even after determining the right location and markets for your small or home business, you will also need to look at personal considerations. Will you be happy in this area? If you will need to move to a new area, will your family members also be happy in this new location? If you are not happy living or working in the area of your small or home business, this can affect you emotionally and your work performance will lag. Make sure that you are happy in your location, and your work will continue to be productive and effective!
