Make sure that you are prepared to hire workers - Depending on the line of work that you are in, there are different rules and regulations regarding the hiring of employees. In almost every state you will need to have your business registered with the state and obtain a business license before you can legally start hiring people. If your line of work involves hazardous situations you will also need to have worker's compensation insurance or be willing to pay out of pocket for work related injuries. Research the employee requirements in the field that you plan on working in from home to make sure that you have all of your bases covered before incorporating more people into your business mix.

Do background/credit checks - It is always a good idea to obtain permission to do a background check or at least get a quality list of references from potential applicants before hiring them. If you are going to be hiring a partner or someone who will have access to or manage your finances, background and credit checks are certainly reasonable if not encouraged. Make sure that you have thoroughly checked the character of your potential employee before considering hiring them onto your team.
Independent consultant/work for hire - If you are looking for outside help for your home business but only need that help on a consulting level or do not necessarily need your employees to be working in the same office as you, consider hiring independent consultants or "work-for-hire" individuals. When you hire consultants you as the business owner save a lot of money and headaches because not only will you not have to deal with accommodating an employee with work space but when you have independent consultants fill out a 1099 form, you are not responsible for paying half of taxes like you would be in every other instance.
Take your time - The people who you hire first, during the most influential time of your business growth, can truly be make or break factors for the success of your business. This is no time to make hasty decisions. Take a reasonable amount of time to check references, verify employment history and credentials, and hold at least two interviews before making a final decision. Of course you will want to be reasonable as the employees truly worth hiring are not going to be waiting around forever. But do not make a decision as important as this one by first impressions, good looks, or any other quality that may not be there anymore once the employee starts coming to work.
