How to know if a home based business is legitimate.

If you want to work from home, you're like many other Americans who find the chance to be their own boss, set their own hours, and work out of the comfort of their own home appealing.
If you are searching for a home based business opportunity, you may have noticed that they are not hard to find. TV infomercials, commercials on the radio and on television, newspaper ads, even signs on the side of the road all promise the ability to make a great deal of money while working from your home. However, many of these so-called opportunities are nothing more than scams that will do nothing but collect large amounts of money from you. Most times, the people who fall victim to these don't even make any money from them.

In order to avoid being a victim of this type of scam, it's important to know how to tell if a home based business is legitimate or not. The following tips will help you determine whether a business is legit:
- They don't ask for money up front. A work-from-home scam will most likely demand a large sum of money from you up-front. This could be $50 or it could be $5,000. Legitimate companies do not ask for money up front in order for you to get further information or materials. However, some companies might require an initial, small, one-time registration free, but there are many companies that will not require any money from you to start.
- They don't make grandiose promises. Home based business scams often promise that you'll make outrageous amounts of money, doing little work, in a short amount of time. A legitimate business opportunity will be honest and upfront with you about income potential, whereas a scam will promise to make you a millionaire in a year or $1,000 a week working part time.
- They require experience. A legitimate business opportunity wants people who know what they're doing. Scams often offer big money with "no experience necessary!" Think about it - would you hire someone and trust them with your business if they knew nothing about the industry? Probably not.
- They don't pressure you. If you call a home-based business scam and express any interest in their product or ask for more information, their skilled salespeople on the other line will most likely pressure you to act immediately. They might tell you the opportunity will expire or become more expensive after a certain amount of time. A legitimate business doesn't use high-pressure tactics to get you to buy into their opportunity.
- They are not vague about the job description. Home based business scams spend the majority of their time and energy in their sales pitches talking about how much money you can make instead of actually describing the duties that need to be performed. Again, a legitimate business will tell you everything you need to know up front.
- They do not have a negative rating on the Better Business Bureau. Before you decide to go with a home based business, check them out on the Better Business Bureau. This is a great resource for reading reviews from other users about a business. If there are any negative reports, steer clear. A legitimate business will not have dozens of reports claiming that they are a scam.
