A good manager is a secure manager, and a secure manager equals secure employees. Being a secure manager isn't the only way to reduce insecurity among staff members; here are just a few things you can do to help make your staff more secure with themselves, their work responsibilities, and your company.

  1. As a manager you are a leader. Your staff looks to you for guidance. Therefore, be careful about how you operate at work. Set an example for your employees to follow. Observe and follow company policies and procedures. If you do not, how can you expect your staff to? Listen respectfully, and be open to ideas and opinions. Never criticize or belittle an employee for expressing an idea or an opinion. Employees should be able to come to you if they have a work related issue or question without the fear of punishment.
  2. Communicate openly and clearly. Give staff members a clear understanding what is expected of them and how it is to be done. Make sure they understand exactly what their job responsibilities and tasks are. If an employee is unsure of what his job responsibilities are or if he is unsure how to perform those duties, he is going to be insecure with himself, his work and his role in the company.
  3. Give your staff members suggestions and encourage them to share their own ideas on how to pest perform their job tasks. Letting employees voice their opinions and ideas, helps them to feel valued. Nobody likes to be bossed around, you are the boss, you know it and your staff knows it, but you are not a drill sergeant, so don't act like one. A manager who is constantly giving orders will create feelings of insecurity. Employees will not only feel insecure but intimidated as well.
  4. Don't be afraid to change existing practices to achieve a higher level of productivity and efficiency. Involve your staff members; ask them for their ideas and opinions to become more productive. Just because something has been done a certain way for some time does not mean there isn't room for improvement.
  5. Provide your staff with feedback on a continuous basis. Don't wait and save it all for review time. Employees need to know they are performing their jobs correctly or incorrectly. Knowing that they are performing their duties properly will help to avoid feelings of insecurity. Share your thoughts on areas that may need improvement and provide the necessary training to do so.
  6. Having a staff of talented individuals who work independently is nowhere near as productive as having a highly skilled team working together. Encourage team work, hold regular meeting where everyone is involved and is able to express their opinions and ideas.
  7. Provide good training especially for new employees. Providing the proper job training for employees ensures the job they perform is done correctly and efficiently. Giving your employees the opportunity to increase their training and skills when needed will help them to increase their job performance, therefore increasing the overall success of your company.
  8. Treat your employees the same no matter their race, religion, gender, size, age, or country of origin. Treat employees with respect; be polite, courteous and kind. Employees should also be respectful to you and other co-workers, let your staff know that any type of harassment will not be tolerated.
  9. Provide an appropriate rewards and recognition program so people feel their contributions are valued. Reward an employee in ways that are important to the individual, such as time off, or more pay. Praise more frequently than you criticize.
