To begin with, make a business plan. This plan will enable you to get funding for your business. Once you have the funding secured, you will need to make sure you are legal in operating your small business in your home.

To start a small business in your home you will need a business plan. This plan will help you see what kind of funding you might need. Your business plan needs to show banks, investors and State and Federal agencies that you know what you are doing and are ready to take on the responsibility of a small, home business.

So what will you need in your business plan? You will need specifics on sales of any products you will be selling. You will need to have projected sales, inventory and profits for your business. You will also need to have contact information for wholesalers and any other companies you will be dealing with. Some banks will lend to small businesses, especially if you are looking for an SBA loan. But if you looking for investors or funds not secured by the SBA then you will be better off going to a financial institution that is not a bank. Banks will give you SBA loans and second mortgage loans to fund your small, home business. The banks require collateral in most cases and will use your personal credit and information to process the loan.

When obtaining funding for your small business in your home, be sure to take the interest rate into consideration, as well as the length of the loan. You will not want to have a loan payment that will deplete any funds from your business that will need to go to inventory to keep your business going.

Once you have the funding secure for your small home business in your home, you will need to make sure all operations are legal. Begin with the zoning laws for your area. Has the area your house is located in been zoned for a small, home business? There are some states that do not allow even a small business in your home if you will have customers coming to your home. Go to the county offices and find out what the zoning laws are for your area. Sometimes the laws are changeable, but you need to know what they are to begin with. This should be check out while doing your business plan. This is so you can include any cost for any needed changes in the area for your small business.

Then you will need to get the proper licenses. Checking out what kinds of licenses your business may be required to obtain will need to be included in your business plan. Although you will not want to get the licenses until you actually have the funding secured. Most states will require you to get a business licenses either through the State or the city you are in. You will most likely need to register your small business with both the State and city your home is in. You will also need to check with the Federal government, and what their requirements are, especially if you will have employees.

So how do you start a small business in your home? Begin with three major steps. Make a business plan, and have it detailed. Then secure some funding for your small business. And with these two steps contact your individual state and city to see the licenses and requirements you'll need to obtain.
