Many people would love to start their own business for a wide range of reasons, whether it's a great idea that will make life easier for many people or the attractiveness of being your own boss and setting your own hours.

But a great idea is just the beginning. There are many things you will need to do before you can start your business. The following are a few basics for starting your own business.

Write a business plan.
Many people think that business plans are just for businesses that are seeking loans from banks or other types of funding. But even if you will be funding your business yourself, a business map is a great thing to have as it serves as a road map for your business. Even an informal business plan will help you to see how feasible your business is, and is a great resource for mapping out steps you need to take. There are many books and websites that will show you how to make a business plan.

Get funding.
Once you have your business plan and know just how much your start up costs will be, you can go about getting funding for your business. You can do this through a small business loan, a credit card, loans from friends and family, or through your own personal savings. You can combine various sources of funding, from financing some aspects of your business and paying for some yourself.

If you are going to apply for a loan, you will need to have a well-thought out business plan. Lenders of small business loans will also look at your credit score, so make sure it is free of blemishes before applying for a loan.

Decide the type of company
The most common types of business are a sole proprietorship, an LLC (limited liability corporation), or a corporation. Each type of company has its own pros and cons:

  • LLC. An LLC, or limited liability corporation, allows business owners to separate their personal identity and financial assets from their business's. When a company is not incorporated, creditors or partnerships can seize the business owners' personal assets in times of financial distress.

  • Corporations. There are two types of corporations - S Corporations and C Corporations. The income of an S corporation is not taxed under federal tax laws, whereas an S corporation is. There are many tax advantages to having a corporation, which is also the main reason people opt for them.

  • Sole Proprietorship. As the name implies, with a sole proprietorship, the business has just one owner, and that owner is the one responsible for all the businesses debts.

Create marketing materials
Your marketing materials will be crucial in getting the word about your business out. Must-have marketing materials include:

  • Website. You should have a website for you business that provides basic information about your products and services, a shopping cart if applicable, contact information, and examples or photos of your products.

  • Brochures. Brochures are good for mailing and cold calling and can be done yourself with desktop publishing software and a good printer.

  • Press releases. These are free and an excellent way to promote a new business, services, or to get the word out about donations or charities your business is participating in.

Starting your own business is an exciting time. The above tips are some of the basic things you will need to do to get your business up and running.
