To trademark your logo, words, phrases, symbols or designs, you need to submit an application through the United States Patent and Trademark Office to keep your work protected from theft. Here is how.

a. Through this web site there are several informational sources to get your started and help you complete the application for the trademark of your work.

c. Now you will need to determine the type of intellectual property protection you need. You will need to choose one of these three types of intellectual property. Trademarks, patents or copyrights. If you work is under the label trademark, then you will need to continue to the trademark registration process.
d. You will now need to search through the trademarks in order to make sure that no one else has already laid claim to a mark that is the same or too similar to yours.
e. Next it is necessary to complete the identification of goods and services. This needs to be detailed enough to identify the goods and or services.
f. There needs to be a clear picture of your mark.
g. Now that you have all this completed, you can go to TEAS the Trademark Electronic Application System using this link to complete the application. http://www.uspto.gov/web/trademarks/workflow/start.htm
h. When you file the application for your trademark through TEAS, you will receive a confirmation and serial number via email.
It may take several months for the process to be complete for the trademark. What happens after you submit your documentation is that it is sent through to an examining attorney.
The examining attorney will make sure that all the applicable rules, and statues required for completion of the application.
If everything is in order, the examining attorney will approve the mark. If there are minor corrections that are necessary, the examining attorney will call or email the applicant for correction. If however there are significant problems, the examining attorney will send a letter explaining the refusal of the trademark.
At this point there will be a Notice of Publication will be sent by the USPTO. When this is completed, then as long as there are no parties that file disputes of valid ownership, then within about twelve weeks there will be a registration certificate sent.

The delivery of these certified documents come via the Internet, or mailed to you in the form of a CDROM. There are uncertified copies of trademarks available via the fax option.
