An investor consultant provides investors with an investment strategy. Investor consultants are able to take a look at their client's current investment strategy and help them modify it so they can obtain their goals and fulfill their needs. Investor consultants have specific knowledge about investing and they will be used as a long-term approach to helping their clients meet their investment needs.

To get started as an investor consultant, you will need formal training in investing. Some states require a license or a special certification. Even if you aren't required to be certified by law, it is still a good idea because it will help to attract new clients. Investor consultants are expected to know every detail about investing and you can easily upset or lose some of your clients if you don't meet their expectations. You need to study and research the investing field often and make sure you are 100 percent confident in your expertise. Good networking skills will really help you because you may need to contact other consultants for tips and investment strategies. Self-promotion is the key to being a good investor consultant. This means you need to show your clients that you can "back your talk" when it comes to setting up a good investment strategy.

You will need to set aside a room in your home to be your office. Since you are your own boss, you have the freedom and flexibility to work wherever and whenever you want. If you have a nice home office, your clients will recognize this when you are on web conferencing calls and when they meet with you in person. You need to remain professional and provide them with a professional setting.

The amount of time it takes to become a successful investor consultant is up to you. You will need to learn how to spend time advertising, marketing, networking, and fine-tuning your skills. Then you will spend a great deal of time with your clients and looking for new things you can add or change for their investment strategies. During hard economic times, you may end up working twice as hard for your clients to protect their investments.

Deciding how much you want to charge is extremely important. Obviously you need to cover your start-up and operating expenses, but you also don't want to charge too much money. If you charge extra, make sure your clients see that you are going above and beyond for them. You can decide how much to charge by surveying some exsitising investment consultants and finding out how much they charge. Top-end companies are making billions of dollars a year, but they also have 600 or more investor consultants on their staff. Independent investor consultants can still fair pretty well, giving this job a 3 on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest. To really make money as an investor; charge on an hourly basis instead of on a project basis.

Long-term investors are the key to being successful and keeping your revenue stream flowing. If you can get 10 really good clients to start with and you can keep them all happy, it will be a lot easier to find new clients and start expanding your company. Good marketing and self-promotion will go a long way to help you attract new clients. One way to attract new clients is to offer free initial consultations. This will give them a good picture as to what you can offer and it will help to build trust between you and your clients.

Make sure you follow all the federal, state, and local government laws about investor consulting. It is important for your business to have insurance to protect you from any legal repercussions due to bad advice or decisions on your part.
