There are a lot of different things that you will want to take into account when you are starting your own home business. You will want to make sure that you have a separate room where you do your home business away from the rest of your home life. You will also want to make sure that you keep your personal and home business expenses separate. The reason why it is important to keep personal and home business expenses separate is so that you can count them off at the end of the year for taxes. Here are some tips for keeping personal and home business expenses separate.

The first tip is to put the bills that you are getting for your business in your businesses name so that you can know what bills are for your business and which ones are personal. You might not be able to do this with all your bills such as your utilities because you might only get one gas bill and one electric bill. But you will want to make sure that you keep track of these so that your accountant can figure out at the end of the year what percentage of each of the utilities was used for your home business.

The second tip is to put your business name on a business account. You will want to do this whether you have a credit card for your business or a checking account. The reason you will want to do this is so that you will be able to keep track of which account goes with your business and which one goes with your personal finances. This will also help you to be able to keep your books in order because you will know which checking account goes with what without confusion. This is especially helpful if you have some one else that is doing your books that might not know your account numbers to know if they have the right one or not.

The third tip is making sure that if you use certain equipment for your business such as a computer makes sure that you are only using it for your business. The reason for this is because if you have a computer that you want to write off for your business you will not be able to be allowed to use it for both personal and your home business use as well. It has to be strictly for your business.

The fourth tip is supplies. You will want to make sure that if you are buying the same type of supplies for both your personal and business use that you keep track of how much goes to your business and how much goes to personal. Again this will come in helpful when you are doing your taxes so that you can keep track of how many needs to go to your business expenses.

These are just some of the tips on keeping your personal and home business expenses separate. There are a lot of other tips that you might want to look into using. The best way to find out what expenses you will want to keep track of is to talk to your account or who ever is going to do your taxes. This will help you to determine what personal and home business expenses are the most important to keep separate. You will want to make sure that you keep as many personal and home business expenses separate to make things easier for you.
