Learning how to be productive when you work from home

Many people find that working from home has several advantages, but have also realized that in the real world it can be extremely difficult. There are unforeseen distractions, and sometimes even a loss of identity. Learning how to be productive when you work from home is a learned trait. With a little help you can be just as successful in your home office as you were in your office at work. Here are some suggestions on how to do it.

Separate work from home
Even though you're working at home it doesn't mean that the two shouldn't be as separate as possible. In order to be as productive as possible it's important that you separate your work space from your home space. This can be especially difficult when you're living in confined spaces. The ideal situation would be to use a spare bedroom as your work space so that you can shut the door and separate your home from your work. If you don't have an extra bedroom to do that then you have to at least define your work space. Whether you tie up a sheet or just draw a tape line around your space, it has to be "your work space." Family members need to understand that within that area you have to be working.

Structure your time and set regular work hours
It can be difficult for some people when they work from home to set regular "work" hours. They think that they'll be able to get things done sporadically throughout the day. They soon come to find out that when they don't set regular hours with structured work time nothing gets done. You can still give yourself the freedom to go and do things; just make sure you have everything scheduled in for the day. For example, if you decide that you want to take two hours for lunch because you like to work out that's fine; just make sure you gain those hours back sometime during the day or the next. Or if you need to be at your child's school to help out just be sure to make up the time that you missed so you can get everything done you need to.

Get rid of distractions
Make sure your workspace is off limits to roommates or family members during your working hours. It's nice to work from home because you can be close to family but you have to help them understand that your work space is your "work" space. Other distractions you might need to get rid of are the telephone or internet distractions like instant messenger. Keep every personal piece of paper work somewhere where you won't be tempted to look at it; bills, statements, magazines, etc. If it means locking your door then lock it and don't answer it until you are finished working or have planned to take a break.

Get ready for your day
Although many believe that if they worked from home they would never get dressed, or shave. After all who's going to see you right? That statement couldn't be more wrong. Get up, shower, shave, and get ready for your day just as you would if you were going somewhere to work. This gets you up and moving and if you have to run out somewhere you won't waste as much time getting ready in the middle of the day. This daily routine will help you be more productive in most cases. I say "most" because there are a few people that can do it without getting ready for the day.

Getting things done with a home business takes time and planning. It's important to take some time to learn how to be productive when you work from home to help ensure the success of your business.
