Most of us would love to work from home but we don't know how. Wouldn't it be great to work from the comfort of your fireplace and your favorite chair? Think of the comfort you would have. You could have friends and family close to you while you worked. You might actually see your kids grow up and you might be involved in their lives. Think of it! While it might be hard to imagine such a wonderful thing, working from home can be a reality. However, you should know that working from home can be extremely difficult.

It can require a great deal of discipline and hardship. If you already have a good job or a developed career you might want to think again before ditching everything and trying to develop a home based business. You will basically be starting from scratch. Realize that if you are working frantically from home it won't be any better than working frantically from an office. In fact, it could be much worse. So if you have decided to try to develop a new business from home you need to ask yourself some serious questions. You need to ask yourself if you will be able to afford this type of business. Even if you are just trying to run a side business in order to make a little extra money you will need some sort of overhead. Most of us don't have the money to put allot of money into a new business. If you are like most of us you need an idea that will require very little overhead. Luckily there are some home business ideas that will not cost you a great deal of overhead.

Begin by brainstorming. Realize that if you don't have a huge overhead the thing that you are probably going to be able to offer your clients is some sort of experience you already have. What has your past been like? Do you have special training in something that you could teach someone else? Here are few similar ideas:

  1. Handyman. Have you had carpentry experience? Are you competent enough to fix things in someone else's house?
  2. Tutoring. This could be a great way to make some money. Do you play an instrument that you could teach someone else. You would be surprised at the amount of money people will pay for lessons. Also, consider tutoring young children in school or sports.
  3. College planning and consulting. There are lots of people out there who want to help get their children into college. If you have been to college you might be able to advise them about the process. You can help them to succeed on exams on on entrance essays. Think of how many young students are trying to get into college.
  4. Start a home inspection business. This can work but only if you have the proper experience and authority.
  5. With all of these options for a home business with low overhead, remember that you will need to look into the legality of each possibility. Do you need to set up your home business as a corporation? You might need a business license. Look into your local laws for home businesses and make sure to comply with them.

Be creative as you are thinking of possible opportunities for a low overhead home based business. Try different options and see what will work for you given your current situation. With some persistence and good luck you will be able to make your home based business succeed. Good luck!
