Here are some things you need to know about paying taxes on your home business.
Tip one:
As a self-employed individual, you are going to want to pay taxes on your home business earnings by following certain rules and regulations. In order to file your federal taxes on your home business you are going to have to file your home business earnings with your personal federal income taxes, the same thing holds true for your state taxes. You are going to need to file Form 1040 along with a Schedule C or Schedule CZ; this form is due on April 15th following the end of the tax year. You will also need to file a Schedule SE to file your self-employment tax; this form should be filed with your Form 1040. If you are paying estimated tax you will need to file a Form 1040-ES and this form is due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, and 9th month of the tax year, as well as the 15th of the first month following the tax year.
Tip two:
When filing your taxes each year you are going to want to make sure that you file your taxes on time so that you are not hit with any late fees and interest. If you have doubts about whether you can file your taxes by the deadline, you need to file an extension as soon as possible. Just because you file for an extension doesn't mean the interest or late fees will be waived if you owe the IRS any money because most of the time they are not waived. You can get them waived if you pay a certain percentage by the time taxes are due. Therefore, your best bet is to make sure that you file your taxes on time each year and pay your taxes when they are due.
Tip three:
Make sure that you are getting the right deductions for your home business and be sure that you are getting all of the deductions that you are qualified for. There are numerous deductions that you can take when running a home based business, but you want to make sure that you are deducting them correctly. This is important because if they are not claimed correctly you can end up owing the IRS even more money. Therefore, you are going to want to either purchase business tax software or hire a professional to do your taxes for you.
Tip four:
You are also going to want to make sure that you are organized for tax time before tax time happens. The best way to do this is to keep track of all of your expenses and receipts each month. You are going to want to stay organized so that you know that you have everything you need to file your taxes and you are going to want to keep everything as proof for the IRS in case you get audited. What this means is that you want to keep all receipts, utility bills, itemized statements, and anything else that shows what you have paid for business expenses so you can claim them as a tax deduction.
