Business description:
Playing the piano is something that most people do to relax, but if you are an excellent piano player, you can give piano lessons from home. Giving piano lessons from home is a great home business because it requires very little room and very little startup cost, as long as you have the piano. Not to mention that playing the piano is a passion that not many people enjoy, so if you can give piano lessons that allows you to play even more. Imagine being paid to do what you love the most, playing the piano.

Materials needed:

  • Piano

  • Sheet music

  • Timing device

Space requirements:
Piano lessons are considered lessons given on a large instrument; you are not going to be able to move the piano into another room when you are giving lessons. With this in mind, you have a couple of different options. You can give piano lessons in the room that the piano is currently in, but your family will not be able to use the room while you are giving lessons because you will need the privacy. On the other hand, you can have a room, such as the basement or spare bedroom, turned into a music studio, you just need to have the piano moved into the room before you can start giving lessons in there.

Time requirements:

You are going to be the one who determines how much you want to work and how much time you are going to put forth towards piano lessons. The reason that you are going to be the one who determines how much time is going to be required is that you are going to be the one in charge of scheduling your lessons, which will all be private lessons. It is up to you to schedule one or two lessons a day or more if you think you can handle it. Most lessons will need to be in the afternoon or evening and on weekends because of prior commitments, such as school and work.

Income potential:
5 - Piano lessons are a great way to earn a full time income from home because of many people wants their kids to learn the piano. No matter how many piano teachers there are it seems like piano lessons are always in demand, so you will have to worry a little bit about competition, but not as much as in other musical lessons. Piano lessons are always given privately so you can charge anywhere from $50 to $100 per lesson or you can charge per an hour. How much you can charge is going to depend on your skill level, but also on how many other piano instructors are around. The area that you live in is also a consideration in how much you can charge your students.

Keys to success:

  • To be successful as a piano instructor you are going to need to be a superb piano player. If you have not mastered playing, the piano there is no way that you can teach the more advanced students, so your business will not be as successful. You need to be a master piano player so that you can teach all levels of piano playing, and teach all different styles of music.

  • You are going to need to make sure that you successfully advertise your business if you want to be successful. The reason for this is that if you do not advertise your business you are not going to have any students to teach, which means no income coming in. Luckily, you can use advertising techniques that are low cost; some might not even cost you more than your time.

Risks:
  • Your biggest risk when giving piano lessons is your students not showing up and not paying for the lessons. This happens quite a bit because students think that if they do not go to a lesson they shouldn't have to pay for it. This can affect your business because you have set aside this time for the student, so you are losing money when you could have been making money. To prevent this you need to include in your contract what happens if a lesson is missed and the payment agreement.
