Owning a small business can be both exciting and scary. While you watch your business grow and succeed, there are also problems that arise within the company that need to be addressed. There are several problem solving techniques for small businesses to help keep them running smoothly and which will contribute to the success of the business. Here are some problem solving techniques to use in your small business


  1. Understand your problem. This might sound like a simple and silly technique, but it is a crucial one to finding a solution. If you want to find a solution to a problem within your business you need to make sure that you fully understand the problem at hand. After all, you want to be solving the right problem, not going around it.
  2. Know your desired outcome. One of the best techniques to problem solving is knowing your desired outcome or setting some realistic goals. Especially when it comes to business it's crucial to know what your goals are and where you what you are working towards. Sometimes clarifying your desired outcome will often lead to immediate solutions.
  3. Getting other opinions. Problem solving requires the opinion of more than just you and another employer. Often times problem solving requires the opinion of all employees. Any contributing ideas can help with a good solution and help you see things from all points of view. Sometimes it can also help to solve a problem if you can explain to others what the problem is.
  4. Search for other alternative ways to solve the problem. Complex problems consist of seeking out expert knowledge; case studies, diagnosing, modeling, testing, etc. A great technique for problem solving is trying and testing out different ways to solve the problem and seeking outside resources and advice on resolving it.
  5. Break it apart. Sometimes even the most difficult problems are solved by breaking it into smaller, simpler parts. Most large problems are usually a culmination of smaller problems put together, so breaking them into smaller parts can help with finding a solution to your problem.
  6. Keep an open mind. Too many of us are looking for just one way to solve a problem, when in fact there may be several ways to solve the problem at hand. Especially small businesses where there are so many different dynamics that come into play, keep in mind that there may be several possible solutions could be possible.
  7. Draw it out using a cause and effect diagram. Cause and effect diagrams can be extremely helpful in identifying the likely causes of problems. They can help you thoroughly think through every part of the problem as well as finding all possible causes of the problem. You probably remember doing something like a diagram map in high school and using those to narrow down your research. Cause and effect diagrams can help you do several things:

  • Helps identify the problem

  • Helps work out the major factors involved with your problem

  • Helps better identify possible causes of your problem

  • Analyzing your diagram to narrow down the most likely causes for your problem.


As you can see there are several problem solving techniques for small businesses. As each company is different with different dynamics, it will depend largely on your company to determine which techniques work with your business and which ones don't.
