Business description:
If you enjoy quilting, you will be interested to know that you can turn your love of quilting into a home business. The one thing that you want to be aware of is that you will need to change your mind frame in order for your business to be successful. Starting a quilting business will allow you to sell quilts that you have made or you can sell quilting blocks to people who do not like making quilting blocks to put together their own quilts. You can do numerous things with a home based quilting business.

Materials needed:

  • Fabric - scraps, yards, etc

  • Needles

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Batting

  • Sewing table

  • Quilting frames

  • • Storage containers

Space requirements:
If you want to start, a home based quilting business you are going to need to have a decent sized room set aside in your house for your business. You will need a decent sized room because you are going to need to fit your sewing table and frames inside of the room so that you can quilt. You will also need to have room to store your fabric and other quilting materials, so the more stuff that you have the bigger room you will need.

Time requirements:

Quilting is going to be a very time consuming business. One of the reasons for this is that making a quilt takes a long time to accomplish, so the more hours you spend working on it each day the faster you will be able to get it done. Part of the reason that quilting takes so long is because most people only quilt by hand; they do not use a sewing machine. If you used a sewing machine, you would be able to accomplish more, so you would not have to spend hours working. You will have to decide which method is going to work the best for you and your business.

Income potential:

3 - The income potential for selling quilts is not going to be that high because of all the hours that you have to put into working. If you were to make quilt blocks and sell those to other quilters, you could add to your income from selling quilts. In addition, with quilts to sell them at boutiques and fairs you will have to pay a fee to sell your products, which mean you, will need to up charge your quilts to cover your booth rental fee.

Keys to success:

  • You have to change the way that you view your quilting. Most people who quilt view it as a hobby, so to turn it into a successful business you will need to view it as a business. This means you are going to have to quilt during the day, even if you don't feel like it. Viewing your quilting as a business means you have to act professionally about your quilting and follow specific guidelines.

  • To be successful at quilting you are going to need to be creative. This means that you will need to let your creative side come through to your quilts so that they have that special touch. You cannot simply follow a pattern in a book to make the quilt look outstanding.

  • You will need to have an idea about color matching. Quilts use a variety of colors and shapes and you will be in charge of picking which colors go best with each other to make the quilt stand out from other quilts.

Risks:
  • The biggest risk that you face with quilting is people not buying your quilts or your equipment breaking. If nobody buys your quilts, the biggest thing wasted is going to be the time that you put into making the quilt. To help prevent this from happening the best thing that you can do is to advertise your business and do market research to ensure there is a demand. For your equipment breaking, the best thing that you can do is have spare pieces of your key equipment so that getting it fixed will not put you out of work.
