Setting your small business objectives

Setting up a small business can be a time consuming task. It's hard to know where to start, what you'll need, and what your goals are. For a successful launch, setting your small business objectives should be your number one goal. Without clear objectives you can run into some major problems. A business plan or clear objectives need to be firmly planted in order to be successful. A business strategy is also required so that you have a way to follow through with your plan. Objectives are the difference between your small business just being a dream, or being able to turn it into reality. With a strong business plan in place and a vision of where you want your business to go, you can literally take off. As things get crazy and unclear, you can always look back to your initial business plan and objectives and re-focus your efforts to a successful business. Here are some
suggestions on setting your small business objectives and coming up with a solid plan.

1. Objectives need to be Specific. Specificity means that your objectives are concrete, detailed and focused. In business there is no room for "wishy washy" objectives because you need a clear direction. Being specific in your objectives for your small business means that you are action oriented. Keep them as straight forward as possible and be sure to emphasize the action needed for your desired outcome. When you are specific in your objective goals you communicate clearly your vision of the future; where you want to see the company in 10 years and how you will get it there. In order to set specific goals there are some questions you can ask yourself:
What am I doing? How will you develop your business? How do you plan to execute your objectives? And what is most important?
Why is it so important? Understanding your reasoning behind starting a small business is extremely important as it will drive your motivation to action.
Who is going to help? Do you plan on running the business alone or will there be others involved in the process? Bankers, lawyers, friends, family, etc.
When do I want this finished? Although small businesses do not have a start and finish line, your objectives will. You should be continually making new objectives to reach new goals, and creating a time frame is a good way to accomplish them.
How will I accomplish my objectives? You need a plan of action.

2. Make sure your Objectives are Measurable
You want to be able to track your progress so you need to make sure that when you are setting your small business objectives that you can measure them. It has been said many times before that "if you can't measure it, you can't manage it." Measurement provides encouragement for improvement and gives motivation because you can see your progress. Measurements help us gage if we have achieved our objectives.

3. Objectives need to be achievable. What good is an objective is you won't be able to achieve it successfully. And an objective that is so far out of reach is hardly worth attaining. Objectives are different from a vision. You can envision where you want your company to be in 10years, but you need to have clear objectives to attain that vision. You should be able to achieve your objectives within a 3-5 year period. You can then re-assess and set new objectives.

4. Be realistic about your objectives. It does not good for you as a small business owner to be unrealistic in where you are headed. Being realistic means that you need objectives where you know you will have the resources to accomplish your goal. How much money do you have? What skills do you possess? What equipment is available to you?

5. Objectives need a time limit.
We discussed this briefly already, but in setting objectives you need to have a time line for when you want it accomplished. Without a deadline you reduce motivation and the need to get things accomplished. Deadlines encourage immediate action.

Setting your small business objectives is a critical step in the success of your business. Taking the time to come up with some specific, measurable, achievable, and realistic goals can help you on your way to success.
