The consulting industry has really taken off and people are starting to make a great income from the comfort of their own homes. If you have expertise in small business, becoming a small business consultant may be right up your alley. More than half of all consulting businesses are operated by one person. A small business consultant will help small businesses start, grow, and build their business. They offer advice on different marketing strategies and other things to try that will increase their profit revenue.

If you plan on becoming a small business consultant, you need to have a home office. This office must contain a computer with internet access, phone, FAX machine, office supplies, and a web site. It is a great job for anyone that has the skills on how to run a small business. Having a degree in business will increase your chances of attracting new clients. It also helps to create a portfolio so clients can learn about the different services you offer and your qualifications.

Since you will need enough room in your home for an office, you need to make sure it is not cluttered. Provide yourself with enough room to hold important documents from your clients. It is also important to decorate the room nicely because you will have some meetings with your clients in your office. If they walk into a home with dingy office furniture, their perception about your skills will immediately diminish.

Small business consulting requires a lot of time. You need to have good networking skills and understand how to sell companies to others. Depending upon the type of small business consulting you do, you may even need to do some traveling. You will also need to spend some time investigating your competition so you can see how you fare against them. Find ways to outperform your competitors either through price or by offering better services. A lot of your time will be spent looking for clients. Unlike other consulting businesses, you need to put in a lot of hours to really keep your business alive, especially if you are the only employee.

You can become financially successful with small business consulting, but it will take awhile to develop. On a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest you can make, small business consulting rates as a 3.5. This is because some people don't put in enough time and hard work and their businesses fail. The people that spend a lot of time will make the most money.

You need to become a salesman with your small business consulting company. People need to believe in what you are saying and you need to come up with creative ways to inform them about your products and services. Work hard at developing good communication skills. To be successful, you need to advertise a lot. How will small businesses know you exist if they have never seen an advertisement? Reply promptly to emails and phone calls. Try not to keep your clients waiting because this will only cause them to start looking elsewhere for their consulting needs. Send your quotes out within the same business day. Small business owners don't like to be kept waiting and they will appreciate your promptness.

As with any small business, you must be in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. If you need to get licensed, do so before your business starts getting too big. You also need to pay your taxes on your own or else you will face some big fines from the IRS.
