As a small home business owner, you probably already know that only 80% of most small home businesses fail within the first three to five years. One of the reasons for the failure is due to a poor business and marketing plan. Your business plan is your blueprint for success. When it is well thought out, and you have made plans for the future and challenges it may bring you are more likely to succeed. Every business needs to have a marketing plan, however in all the hustle and bustle most business owners spend too much of their time working on the product and getting jobs done and neglect to form a good marketing plan. Creating a marketing plan can be somewhat daunting, so here are some ways to keep your small home business marketing plans a little more simple.

  1. Organization. Getting organized and ready to write your marketing plan is the first step. How can you hope to market your business and its product if you do not take the time to organize your strategy? There are a few individuals who may be able to make spur of the moment marketing decisions, but that is rare and you are not likely one of those people. Know what your budget is and how you can spend the money you have. Know where the money is going and how you are going to use it to market your business. This is your business, so every detail should count. Don't short change yourself by not going through this step thoroughly.
  2. Don't limit yourself to one or two marketing tools. There are a number of different ways to market your business so be sure and look into all of them. Figure out which ones will fit best with your business and roll with them. Promotional tools used in marketing your small home business are things such as brochures, business cards, or business gift items are relatively affordable and can have a lasting impact on clients and potential customers. You can also use internet and online tools to market your business. Most businesses make use of the internet as a marketing tool because it is the most accessed platform of the world. It allows them to implement business strategies at a much cheaper rate than some of the other marketing tools out there. Another way to market your business is to use the referral system. This is done by making arrangements with another trade. You can use other companies by having them advertise your business for you. There are many other marketing tools to learn about so make sure you do some research on what the best way to market your small home business is.
  3. What is your target market? You should always know who your target market is and who your ideal customer will be. When you have figure that part out, you must them discover a way to reach them. You're not going to be able to meet everyone's needs, so don't try doing it. Look at your target market, and come up with a plan on the best way to reach them. Be specific!
  4. Keep track of your sales results. As your sales increase and your business starts to "boom" makes sure and keep track of why sales are increasing. What's the reason behind it? If you know what specifically made your sales increase, you are more likely to keep them increasing. And who in business doesn't like the idea of more sales? Keeping track of sales results also allows you to get rid of things that may not be working so well.

If you want your small home business to make money, then go back and think about making a small home business marketing plan. Take your business seriously, so others will to.
