A really great piece of jewelry can be like a great work of art. It is something you can appreciate and that will be appreciated by almost everyone else. A beautiful piece of jewelry will catch other people's eye and will help you to feel good about your appearance. Many of us would love to be able to make our own jewelry but we don't think that we are capable. Could you create a great work of art? Most of us doubt ourselves when it comes to creativity but we should not. You would be surprised to know that many, many people make their own jewelry. It is actually not that difficult to start, although creating some really nice pieces might take some time. So if you create jewelry or you are planning to start creating jewelry you should know that many people actually make a living selling their jewelry creations. With the internet you will have access to thousands of interested buyers. However, there are a few things that you should know about running a small home jewelry business.

  1. Realize that you will be running a business. If you will be selling materials from your home you will need to license your business. The rules for licensing vary by the area you are in so you will need to check and see what your local area requires. Also, you will need to check with a lawyer and accountant to make sure that you keep appropriate track of tax information. For example, you will probably need to charge sales tax on items you sell. If you are selling things out of your home you also might need to check and see if you will be violating any zoning laws.
  2. Once you have figured out all the legal technicalities you also need to look at your finances. Realize that you will need some extra capital at the beginning to get the business going. You will probably want to keep your job while your business is getting going. Don't just quit a good job and hope that your business will take off immediately. Be patient.
  3. Market your jewelry. Realize who you will be selling your jewelry to. Who is your target buyer? Think about places they will be looking to buy jewelry. Then start placing your jewelry in jewelry and craft fairs. Another thing you will need to do is to start marketing your jewelry online. This is what will really help to get you selling. When you sell online you sell to thousands of people. Make it easy for people to buy your jewelry online. Make sure they have a secure payment system and that you advertise on reputable websites.
  4. Be professional. You might not think that it will be important to have the usual business stuff (business cards, business suits, etc.) but it is a really good idea. Make sure that your displays are professional and clean. A good image will help you sell most of your product. It will also help your customers to take you seriously, even if you are working out of the home.

With some hard work and persistence you can create a lucrative home based jewelry business. As with all new businesses, have some patience and expect things to go slowly at first. Your creativity will sell itself if it is original and if you target a particular set of buyers you will be successful. So give it your best and you might be able to make a dream become true. Good luck!
