Starting an e-business from your home business
The internet has quickly become a business owner's dream - with over 120 million web users in the United States, 60 million Americans who regularly shop online, and with online purchases making up a staggering $26 billion a year, it's no wonder so many are turning their home businesses into e-businesses.
If you'd like to start an e-business from your home business, there are a number of steps you'll want to take in order to make it a success.
Get a webpage
If you don't already have a website, this is the first thing you should do. There are a number of web hosting services that can provide you with a domain and domain name for a minimal cost. A webpage is crucial, since it allows your customers to email you with questions, place and track orders, view FAQs (cutting down on questions and concerns you receive), and other things.

Have your site designed
Once you have your page, you will need to make sure it looks as polished and professional as possible. Many people attempt to design their own sites and pages, and some can do so acceptably. However, the average person who has no experience with programming and design will end up with a site that looks cheap and unprofessional. With an e-business, your website is all your customers have to learn about your business. If you want your e-business to succeed, you have to make it look presentable and professional.
That said, you will want to hire a professional web designer to make your site. You have a number of options here. You can go to a web-design firm, which specializes in creating web sites for businesses. You can find a good firm by asking around, or if you see a website you particularly like, see who designed it and then go from there.
You may also want to consider hiring an independent programmer or web designer, especially if a completely new website (which can run in the thousands) is not in your budget at the moment. Often, these independent programmers can provide the same quality work and service as a design firm, typically for a much smaller fee. If you're worried about quality, make sure you ask to see sample, just as you would with a design firm, and keep in mind that most of these programmers worked for design firms before going on their own, or have an educational background in design.
Market your site
Now that you have a website and you're ready to go, you will need to market your site in order to get traffic to it. Send out announcements to your customers that you have taken your business online. Include your web address and email in all of your business communications; you will need to change your stationary and brochures to reflect the updated page and address. If you have a company vehicle, put the name of the website on your car. Market your new site in as many ways as possible.
With so many people turning to the Internet on a daily basis, turning your business into an e-business is a smart business decision. In order to make the most of your new e-business, make sure you have a well-designed site, and market your new e-business as much as possible.
