- One of the first things you will need to do is figure out your financial situation. Do you have the money you need to start a new business? Realize that the first little while will probably be quite slow and that you will probably need some extra money to keep you going. Also, realize that you might have to buy certain items and assets. If, for example, you will need certain tools, you need to budget for them. Be careful in your estimates and make sure that you have the necessary equipment.
- Another important tool is know how. You might be very good at producing the product that you will sell, but this doesn't mean that you know how to run a small home business. Consult with other small home business owners and get their ideas. Pay attention to what they say about dos and don'ts of the small home business.
- Develop a business plan. If you want your business to grow and for investors to get involved you will need a business plan. This will not only organize your business ideas, but will provide your investors and clients with a clear idea of what they are getting into. It will show them that you are organized and serious, even if you are running the business from your home.
- Make sure that you are legally sound. In the planning stages you need to consult with a lawyer and accountant to think about what sort of entity your business will become. You also need to think about keeping good records and paying taxes. Pay attention to zoning laws and also make sure to check with your local business office about area laws. Another thing you might want to consider is purchasing some sort of inventory insurance if you have large amounts of inventory in your home.
- Think about image. Your home business needs a positive and professional business image. Generate business cards and stationary. Make sure that you are professional in all meetings and dress appropriately. Don't think that you are not running a business just because you work from home.
- Think about advertising. How will you get people to think about your business? How will they know about what you are doing. Start advertising early.
