There are warning signs that you can learn to recognize that a direct sales firm or MLM is not going to work. There are several direct sales firms, and MLM companies that are great opportunities. However in some cases the tactics and business practices that are promoted by representative of these companies, and opportunities create an atmosphere that will limit the success of the people on the lower ends.

MLMs are often times a legal form of a pyramid scheme and it needs to be thoroughly researched to find the right MLMs to work with. In a direct sales firm, you will need to take the time to read about the product, and make sure it is something that will work for many people, not just the person who is trying to set up the sales with you.

Start by researching the company's sales and profits for the last five years. Ask for proof of earnings of their distributors. Not just the people at the top. The top people are going to make money, but they make that money from the people that work for them. What do those people make?
If you are promised big, it needs to be something that can have a turn around of your investment within a few weeks.
If it looks too good to be true, it is likely not true. You need to be able to sort out the real from the impractical.
Trust your instincts. If it appears to be that there is a problem, you will find that in the long run the problems will out weigh the benefits. Do not try to make it a good thing if it is not a good thing.

If they want money up front or are asking for personal information immediately, be cautious in giving this up. It is a good idea to check out the company before you are willing to give out your hard earned cash or personal information.
