When should you hire a professional, when should you do it yourself with small or home businesses?

If you are involved in a home business, you will get really good at being a "one-man-band" and doing everything by yourself. As a small business owner you will wear so many hats that your hair will start to thin (at least that's how my husband explained it to me). For example, you might find yourself wearing the hat of a designer, an advertiser, an accountant, a marketer, a customer relations specialist, and a sales person and that's just the beginning. However, there are certain times when you should not try to go it alone and should go ahead and hire a professional to help you. The following are suggestions for when you might hire a professional.

When making your budget-any successful business needs to start out with a good plan. If you are serious about making money with your small home business, you need a business plan. A part of a business plan is a budget. There are budgeting programs available; however, if you know nothing about business you might not even understand some of the language in those programs. If you are baffled by the thought of a "break-even analysis" go ahead and hire a consultant to help you build your budget. A professional will be able to create your budget quickly, explain to you what everything means, and get you started with user-friendly software that will allow you to manage your budget from that point on.

When you are making a webpage-webpages are becoming extremely important in today's market. If you plan to do any business via the web, you need a good website. Unless you have some training in website development and own the software necessary to build a website, you will have to hire someone to do it for you. Fortunately, web design is one of the largest home based businesses and it is easy to find good, cheap web designers almost anywhere. As long as you are hiring a professional to do your web page, you might consider hiring a marketer to do the whole marketing thing. You can get a package deal and have a marketer design your logo, make your business cards, and build your webpage for one fee. This is one of the best places to put your business money because a good marketer will help you make money.

At tax time-unless you know an awful lot about taxes, business law, write-offs, and deductions, you need to hire a professional to do your taxes. Keep all of your receipts and all of your invoices organized so that when you deliver everything to your CPA in February, he or she will be able to get the job done and get it done quickly. Ask around before hiring a CPA or selecting a firm to do your taxes. Some people are just better than others and a good tax person will be able to save you quite a bit of money.

If you need a lawyer-do not try to handle any law related problems by yourself. If you are sued or need to sue somebody, get a professional to handle all of the proceedings. Even if you are a super genius and the case appears to be open and shut, you still need an attorney. The other side will have an attorney, with all the networking connections, years of law school, and years of practice on their side. Do yourself a favor and make it a fair fight. A lawsuit that seems obvious to you and all of your friends can quickly go the wrong way do to some loophole that you know nothing about. Don't find this out the hard way. Hire an attorney.
