Why small business is only called small

If you have been involved in small business for very long, you will have discovered the misnomer in the name. Small businesses are called small for various reasons like small profit margins or few employees. However, small businesses require attention at just about every level that big businesses require attention. You might not need a human resources department or a quality assurance team for your small business but you will need to see to a wide variety of other things that makeup departments in large businesses. The reason that this job is so much bigger than it looks is because in a small business, the whole shebang is run, hands on, by little old you.

Accounting and finance-maybe you didn't go to business school or earn your CPA. Too bad, if you are running a small business, you will need plenty of business and accounting skills. Before beginning the business, you will need to develop a business plan. This mainly consists of a budget and includes project profit margins over the first year of operations. You will also be in charge of managing the books and seeing that you stay within your budget while handling unexpected expenses.

Advertising and marketing-again, some people spend four years in college learning these skills. You will need to develop them on the fly if you are starting a home business. One of your biggest focuses should be on growing the business by recruiting new customers or gaining new contracts. To do this, you need to advertise your product or service. In today's market, you will also need a website. If you have not learned how to build a website and don't want to spend the $1000s of dollars necessary to buy a good website development program, this is something that you will need to contract out.

Public relations-if you are dealing with the public you should focus on public relations at all times. When ever you are interacting with a client or a potential client or even someone that might know a potential client, you should have your game face on. The way that you are viewed by the public will largely determine your clientele. If there are ever problems with one of your customers, you need to know how to handle that problem. This sounds like a lot of work for someone that just wants to walk other people's dogs for a little bit of money. It is a lot of work. That is part of the reason that small businesses aren't really small at all.

Education and professional development-no matter what it is that you are doing in your home based business, you can always learn more about it. This is especially true in rapidly changing fields like the technology industry. You might start the business and spend all of your time trying to work and grow the business and none of your time learning about the latest and greatest strategies, trends, or gadgets available. You need to spend some of your time staying current. You can do this, to a large degree by reading magazines and journals that are related to your field. You might also want to attend a conference or seminar from time to time that relates to your business. By staying current, you will be able to do the best job for your clients and you will be more attractive to future clients.

These are just a few examples of the areas that you will need to attend to with your small home business. As you can see, the scope of business is just as broad if you are dealing with a little company that generates $20,000 a year or a huge corporation that generates millions.
