One of the best ways to cut down your school expenses is to get some one else to help pay for you to go to school. One of the ways you can do this is through scholarships. In many cases you are not going to get a scholarship if you do not apply for it. So, when looking for ways to cut down on your school cost, look for scholarships.

The following are some of the places you can look for scholarships, and how they can help you save money:

  1. School scholarships. Most colleges offer some scholarships to students. Most schools have scholarships for various programs, sports, and academic fields. So, if you know what your intended major is, it is wise to not only apply for the general scholarships offered through schools, but to also go to the specific departments and apply for scholarships offered within those departments. For example, if you are an English major, you could get a general academic scholarship for partial tuition, but if you were to apply to the English department you may qualify for a better scholarship. So, check with the school as a whole, as well as the department you are most interested in, or already involved in, and find out if anything is offered that you can apply for to save money on the cost of tuition.
  2. Organization scholarships.
One way that many large corporations like to give back to the community is through college scholarships. Big businesses like Wal-Mart, McDonalds, etc. often offer scholarships, and it is possible to get a large portion of school paid for simply by applying, and qualifying. There are usually hundreds, if not thousands, of people who apply for such scholarships, but it never hurts to try. In addition to some of the bigger corporation, some non-profits also offer good scholarships for youth that are involved in the community, get good grades, etc. For example, the Elks Foundation gives out a number of $1000 or similar amount scholarships to students who do a lot of community service, are involved in school, and get good grades. Rotary Clubs give scholarships, as well as other similar foundations, clubs etc. So, find out who offers scholarships, what you need to do to qualify, and start applying for them.
  3. Random scholarships.
There are tons of different scholarships available and for a variety of reasons. Your race, your community involvement, your parent's form of employment, etc. can all help qualify you for various scholarships. Most high schools have counseling centers where someone is in charge of helping students find and apply for scholarships, so take advantage of this, and apply for as many as you can, even if they are small.

A $500 scholarship here, a $1000 one there, and you can get a great deal of your tuition paid for, saving you money, and freeing up your money for other things.
