There are a couple of things you need to realize before you start using the card. You need to know that credit cards are dangerous things. Like any other form of debt they involve interest rates, and often very high ones. One of the best things to do is to choose a credit card with low interest rates. Some credit cards have a variable rate that will change in time. Most of them go up pretty quickly. You could find yourself paying very high rates for a card you have only had for half a year. You might also have to pay extremely high late fees and your interest rate could change if you are late on payments. Basically the credit card companies will try to find any way they can to get money out of you. So one of the best uses of a credit card is to limit the amount you pay by choosing a good card.
Probably the best way to use a credit card is to assume that it is like cash. You can't spend cash that you don't have, right? What this really means is that you should only spend what you can pay for. When you buy something with a credit card you need to be able to pay the balance before the interest actually kicks in. Basically you don't want to have any kind of credit card balance for very long. If you can pay off the balance every month you might not have to pay any interest.
What you buy with your credit card depends allot on how much cash you will have to pay it back with. However, you should keep in mind that credit cards should probably not be used for frivolous purposes. Because it is difficult for people to resist buying big things with credit cards that they don't need, you should keep yours around mostly for small purchases or for emergencies.
