Track what you spend
Track your spending for a few months and you will be surprised what you can cut back on and what you can save. See what your bad financial habits may be.

Itemize your spending and expenses
List your monthly income
List what you spend on living expenses:
Rent/mortgage, utilities, food, auto, insurance, education, clothing, entertainment, health, personal care, gifts and other expenses

Compare expenses and monthly income to create your budget
List any positive cash flow

If you have money left over, you are doing great!

List your negative cash flow
If you spend more than you make, then you are in danger of real financial trouble.

Cut back on spending
Find ways to cut back your spending so you have more money left over at the end of the month. If you can't think of anything to cut back on, reconsider what is a necessity and what is a want. If there is a great sale on something, instead of buying it because it's cheaper, resist buying it altogether. You probably wouldn't have even bought it unless you saw it on sale. Chances are you can do without it.

Other things you could cut back on could be eating out less for dinner and lunch. Make lunch at home and take it with you to work. Do without your coffee or your soda a few times a week. Just cutting back on these items can save you hundreds of dollars a month.

Having a budget will show you where you are spending your money and where you can cut back on spending. A budget informs you on how much you make compared to how much you spend. When you realize what you are spending your money on, you might be surprised how much you can save by just fixing some bad spending habits.
