Tip one:
You will need to make sure that you take a close look at your cell phone bill to be sure that you are only getting charged for the services that you are using or that you signed up for. Many times people do not pay attention to the extra charges that you can find on cell phone bills so they are paying a higher rate than necessary. But even when people do pay attention they see things that have an official sounding name so they don't think twice. Sometimes these charges that have official sounding names are actually extra charges added on by your provider that are not required for you to pay. If you are unsure of what charges you should or should not be paying your best bet is to use some software, such as Validas. This software allows you to download your cell phone bills and then analyzes your bill to see what charges you can eliminate from your phone bill.
Tip two:
Gather at least three months of your cell phone bills and take a close look at the minutes that you have used for the past three months, you can also go back longer. In fact it is recommended that you go back at least a year so that you really get a feeling for your cell phone usage. What you are doing is looking at your bill to see what your current plan is and how many minutes that you actually use. One big problem that many people have is they are not on the right plan for their amount of usage. They are either paying too much for too many minutes that they are not using or they are going over their minutes each and every month so they are having to pay overage charges in addition to their monthly plan amount. So you want to look to see that you are on the best plan for your cell phone needs, this includes text messaging plans and internet usage as well.
Tip three:
You want to make sure that you are not using your cell phone to call 800 numbers. Sure 800 numbers are free to call, but that is only if you are calling from a land line. If you are using your cell phone to call 800 numbers you are still using your minutes, which means it is going to cost you money in minutes used. So if you need to call an 800 number pick up the nearest land line instead so it really is free for you to call, even pay p[hones work for free with 800 numbers.
Tip four:
Make sure that you are not using your cell phone to dial information. These charges can end up costing you around $2.00 per call or even a $1.00 per call. And if you only use that feature once a week that is still $52 dollars or more that you have spent that you could have spent elsewhere. Instead you should pick up the phone book and look up the number instead or you can even get on the internet and use the white or yellow pages that are located there if you don't have a phone book. Or you can call 1-800-Free-411 from a land line at no charge to you.
Tip five:
You want to watch your text messaging, these charge scan add up just as fast as overage minutes because you do not think of them like you do as minutes. But most companies charge people around 10 cents for each text message that is received or sent, this also includes "telemarketing" texts. But the telemarketing ones you can sometimes get removed depending on your provider and your current plan. If you are not going to be using text messaging than your best choice is to block your phone from sending or receiving any text messages. But if you are going top be using text messaging you need to look into the various text messaging plans that are available for a cheaper rate. But when looking at these text messaging plans keep in mind how often you plan on using this feature to ensure that you choose the right plan for your needs.
Tip six:
If you are currently carrying insurance on your cell phone the best thing that you can do is drop it. That insurance ends up costing you anywhere from $3 to $5 a month, which can add up over the years. And the truth of the matter is that more often than not by the end of your contract you have probably already paid enough in insurance to buy one or maybe even two new phones. Not to mention the fact that you can easily replace your phone at a discounted price after having your current plan for at least a year this depends on your service provider. All you have to do to get the discounted phone is to renew your contract with your service provider.
Tip seven:
If you just plan on using your cell phone for emergencies only or even just for talking to family and friends you should look into using a prepaid cell phone, which allows you to pay as you go. With this type of plan you are only paying for the minutes that you are using, rather than a monthly charge. The best part of this option is that once you have used your minutes you cannot use the phone again until you have purchased more minutes. This feature saves you from costly overage charges.
Tip eight:
Look at all of the options and extras that you have included on your cell phone plan. Many times when you are first signing up for a cell phone plan the people signing you up end up talking you into various things that you really don't need, sometimes they even offer it to you free for so many days. And then after your time is up you start getting charged for that feature even if you have never used it. You need to take a close look at your cell phone plan to see what you are being charged for and then make a call and get rid of all the extras that you no longer need, such as Roadside Assistance, Games, Ring tones, etc.
Tip nine:
If you have a number of people in your family who are all using cell phones you should look into purchasing a family plan, which allows you to combine lines on a single plan. These are great because you can usually get the same amount of minutes for two phones at a much cheaper rate than the same amount of minutes for one phone. And on some plans you can even add extra lines for as little as $10 per month. In addition to combining lines you also want to drop any lines that are not currently in use.
Tip ten:
Make sure to take advantage of mobile to mobile calling or in network calling. If you have family and friends that you talk to on a regular basis you should look into joining the same cell phone provider as them so that you can call them as much as you want with in network calling and not use up any of your minutes on your plan, many providers provide in network or mobile to mobile calling for no extra charge. In addition to this you also want to make sure that you are taking advantage of your free minutes, some plans give you night and weekend minutes for free, so try and limit your phone use during the day and make most of your calls at night where they are not going cost you any of your minute and there are no overage charges.
