How do you use your money?
Many people are able to curb their spending habits by assessing how they spend their money. For at least a month, a person should save all of their receipts and/or write down all of their purchases. At the end of the time period, they should categorize the receipts and their spending and add it up. A lot of people may be surprised by the amount of money they waste on things they do not need. Once they are able to see how much money they needlessly spend, a person may be ready to make a budget and better manage their money.
Make a budget
A lot of people have a problem controlling what they spend because they do not have a plan for the money they make each paycheck. Making a budget is a great way for a person to make a plan for how they will spend their money and thus help them curb their spending.
To make a budget a person should write down all of their sources of income. Then they should make a list of all of their expenses that generally do not change from month to month and that have to be paid each month. These expenses could include things such as rent or the mortgage, the phone bill, insurance, a car payment, food, etc.
After making the list of fixed expenses, a person should then list the other expenses they have each month that tend to vary and may not need to be paid each month. These expenses could be things such as clothes, entertainment, gifts, health care, subscriptions, etc.
After the lists have been made, the person can then plug in the amounts of money into certain places. The bills and other expenses that are considered a person's needs should get the money first. Then whatever is left can be divided up between their wants. A budget can help a person curb their spending when they actually see where all of their money needs to go.
Consciously save
Another great way for a person to manage their money and curb their spending at the same time is to set up a savings plan for their money. If a person makes a conscious effort to save some of their money each month they will do better at not spending their money.
Saving can easily be done by including a section in the budget for savings. A person can put a certain dollar amount or a certain percentage of their income into their savings account each month. Then putting money into the savings account becomes more of a weekly or monthly payment to them self instead of just something they do if they happen to have any money left over at the end of the month.
Brainstorm
Curbing spending can take a lot of effort. When a person is used to living a certain lifestyle it can be difficult to change, even if they are forced to. One way that a person can work on curbing their spending is for them to brainstorm ideas for how they can spend less money.
Most people have a lot of ways that they can cut back. Whether a person can let go of their morning latte or start riding the bus to work instead of driving their car each morning. A person should take some time to think of some of the spending habits they are willing to change in order to help them curb their spending habits.
