Banks are one of the most important parts of our economy. An economy without banks is liable to have some serious problems. If you keep all of your money in your house, under your bed, then nobody can borrow money from a centeral source. They would only be able to borrow from private individuals and this could be a serious problem. Banks are the foundation of our economy, which also means that they can create serious problems when things go wrong. This has become particularly clear in recent months, as the United States has suffered from a considerable economic recession due to mistakes made by banks. However, we can't live without them. We simply need to make informed decisions about how to choose banks and accounts. Among the various options for accounts are savings and checking, among other things. Most of us need a checking account-some sort of account that we can draw on. So how will you choose a good checking account for yourself?
If you are searching for a checking account and already have an account with a bank, you might want to consider looking into opening one with your bank. The reason is that banks often offer old customers good deals to open accounts with them.

If this is not the case, you should consider what you want from a checking account. These days there are many, many different types of checking accounts. They all work on the same basic principles, but they have different options. Some accounts have lots of access to automatic teller machines (ATM's). Many banks also offer online banking, which can be a handy way to watch over your accounts. You also need to keep close watch over what kind of fees the bank charges for the account. Do they have fees for ordering new checks? Some banks might offer free checks or suspend other types of bank fees. Many people's employers offer a direct deposit option for their employees. This means that your paycheck can be directly put into your account every month. Make sure that this is an option with your account and that there are no fees involved. Does the account have an overdraft fee?
If you are looking at an a small bank or an online bank, make sure that your money is insured by the FDIC. This is very important, because without the insurance you could loose all of your money in a run on the bank. Also, many banks have strange hours. Will you need to stop by on Saturday, or late in the afternoon to deposit or withdraw money? These are important considerations for you. Also, does the bank offer you a full range of options when it comes to interesting check designs. Because you will be writing checks all the time and looking at the checks you will want to have some sort of personal design. A boring check says allot about a person. If you are going to use the account for business purposes you should have customer checks made. Find out what kinds of fees your bank charges for these sorts of services.

Finally, before you decide on a single bank, you should compare. Go to a couple of banks in the area and make sure that you are getting the best. Where you put your money and the ease with which you can use it are very important. A bad decision when it comes to checking accounts could cost you and leave you very dissatisfied. With some careful research you will find a great checking account.
